Without sounding too optimistic, I do like the tone and mix on the two tracks I've heard. Heads above what they've done in the last 10-15 years. We will see how the songwriting holds up for the entire album. Watching it did make me want to pick up my ESP so I guess you're right and it worked, sort of."I have so much gayness at times. My wife walks in my music room, and there I am, in my undies, listening to "Sister Christian" while lighting fireworks..doin' blow." - Bill Z
"I leave off the back plate and pinch my forskin between the tension springs. That may not work for everyone. But I find that the people love it. Half the tone is in the pud." - Bill Z

Who is that really old guy with the grey hair that keeps screwing around with Kirks guitars? I really didn't recognize him.. i mean everyone gets old, but... wow... still a better head of hair then I have.In the future though I need to remember to not buy guitars while on Nyquil

IMHO this one is the best of the new tunes released that I've heard so far. The other two sound like they tried too hard, and are straining themselves trying to make them sound like old school Metallica. James really needs to get his 80's angry at the world voice back too. I still don't care for Hardwired or Moth even after giving them several listens. This one actually sounds like a natural Metallica tune, and didn't want to make me turn it off after a minute or so. It's not great, but it isn't bad either and it's better than anything I've heard from them in a hella long time.

Maybe the video is to blame, watching them fool around, but to me it sounded like emasculated Megadeth playing past-their-prime Maiden. This isn't old age, this is something much much worse: lack of passion. Watching them playing this live confirms it. They are still trying to find the sound that fans want, but it is just a job for them.
Guitars/production with no bite, riffs so simple they could have been in Kill'Em All but without the aggression, Hetfield sounds like he is carefully reading the lyrics on a page neatly printed in 12-point Times New Roman. Metal up your ass, guys. At least Death Magnetic had that.
I like the direction they seem to want to go, I'll wait to listen to the entire album - and no videos!

They're trying to chase a sound instead of make a sound.
They lost their magic long ago and probably should have tried to create something new than prop up something old.The 2nd Amendment: America's Original Homeland Defense.

I just haven't been able to get into anything these dudes have put out for years now, it is kind of like remembering those that have passed or friends you no longer associate with due to whatever and you choose to simply remember the good times. I loved everything up to and including ...And Justice and say The Prince/Breadfan covers, this new stuff though, just can't get into it.
