Satriani's gear before Ibanez

What guitars and pickups were he using in the early demo work stage of his career. Before the FRED and the 540P. I vaguely recall reading about Kramers and I wasn't sure if the PAF PRO's were neck and bridge in his guitars at the time.

i know in his 80's pop band the Squares, he used a homebuilt Strat style. no idea of what pups though.
