Shadows Fall have quite a few great songs but unfortunately I don't think the singer nails the right sound for them.
I like clean vocals, if you're gonna scream/distort your voice then that's cool too, but only if you can do it properly so that you can actually hear WTF you're screaming. A couple of examples of great "rage" singers are Phil Anselmo and even more notably, Max Cavalera.

i think Brian kicks ass on this record. and Matt's backing vocal on track 6 is awesome.

And dude, put aside Donais and Bachand. have you seen Bittner put on on his drum tutoral??? that guy's fuckin' awesome!

I wouldn't say that, in the early 90's he was a great metal singer... now he's all fvcked up from drugs and booze, mumbles for 2 hours between songs, and runs out of breath by the time he finishes a verse. Then again I've been a die hard pantera fan for like 10 years so I'll end up defending him no matter how bad he sucks now heh.

I don't mind the new KSE singer, I've been listening to their latest CD quite often, but the new Shadows Fall has pretty much taken over my cd player. The last song on it is amazing.

a agree with the 80/20 ratio, bands that just scream all the time usually do that because they dont have the talent to sing good, or they are too shy and afraid they dont sound good. As to all this gay stuff, i think we just hit kindergarden level here!! For crying out loud if you dont like a band, so be it, but dont call them gay, because i tell you alot of these "gay" bands are out there playing there music every night while you sit here and complain about how "gay" they are.

I gotta agree with Siggy on the gay comment. The thing some of you guys need to remember is the scene that most of these bands have come out of, which is largely hardcore instead of straight metal. This also means seeing a lot of emo type bands where ALL the singing is a skinny guy with a weak voice sounding kind of girly... Yeah, it sounds sucky half the time, but those are the guys in the scene that get all the chicks. I do have to disagree with Siggy about the screaming-for-lack-of-talent deal. Bullshizzle!!! Yes, there are a lot of crappy screamers out there, but that requires talent too, and I would hate to hear somebody like Napalm Death with clean singing. [img]/images/graemlins/sick.gif[/img]

this whole happy / angry vocal style is quite gay ....and very exhausted already ....all these friggin' bands all sound the same ...."cookie cutter" metal strikes again

Clean vocals are awesome, but it depends on how they are done, IMHO. In this case, it sounded more like Saliva than Shadows Fall. I love Iron Maiden, Symphony X, and Iced Earth type vocals; HEAVY TREMOLO!!!!!! Shadow's vocalist didn't use any of that.

Dirty vocals are overused, and also all sound the same, unless you're damn good at it. I just can't bring myself to listen to Skinlab because of it. Notice Archenemy, COF, COB, and Dimmu Borgir (at least for DCA album) all sound different.

And as for cookie cutter metal, it will probably be around forever. [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

I like the tone better on this album than the past albums..I have The Art of Balance and ..of one Blood..and the guitar tone on this is signicantly better than both of those.

true..Brian Fairs vocals are the weakest link..that's a no brainer, but he's a very good frontman live.

yeah the guitars are nailed Drip ...but the singer ....well he's not the worst but he's doesn't do the band justice ....then again he's doing "something" right to get them the attention...

I like Speed of Soilwork...that dude is cool as ****...he's in Terror 2000 which is fuggin' amazing! , He's in Disharmonia Mundi which kills....he's a cool frontman....whatever he fronts ...kicks as!

I do like Alexi's voice for some reason ...

Angela of AE is cool on the eyes but she lacks "substance"..

Liva was just way to monotone...but OK at times.

Thom Linberg ...that dude is kick ass...his tone is just classic

the dirty singers I like are in Dimension Zero , The Haunted , The forsaken , Peter of Hypocrisy , Dan Swano , Akerfeldt (RULES) , of course Chuck (Death) , Speed Strid , At the Gates , Carnal Forge , and the like....that's what I'm talkin' about!!

I loathe the monotone , droning , happy , gay vocals all the OC kids are doing now ....Everytime I Die , Atreau , KWE and etc...these dudes are "cookie cutter" fagamabobs ...I hate 'em , even though some of the bands are decent...just ditch the gayness ...it's hard to be "metal" whining like a chick with a skinned knee!

hell yeah! Bjørn "speed" Strid is a kick-ass singer, and not only that but he totally rips it up live as well! saw Soilwork in support of In Flames a couple of years ago when they had just released natural born chaos.
In Flames were really rocking, but Soilwork played their asses off like there was no tomorrow!! I was more impressed with them than IF.
And let it be known that Angela suck balls compared to Johan Liiva!!! god damnit!
Just listen to how much better the first three albums from AE are, than the two with Angela!

I love Brian's vocals in Shadows Fall, I think it fits just fine. He's no Ronnie James Dio but who is (except for Jorn Lande and Rus Allen).

Oh, and for Bill. My favorite heavy singer by far is Johan Lindstrand of what was The Crown. Talk about great all around!
