It's wierd but my favourite Leppard album since Hysteria was Slang, as to me it wasn't too polished and had some soul.....
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

The "Too Late For Love" video from "In the Round" (?) is killer Steve Clark all the way. I always liked Steve's guitar work. I agree with bsteff666 all the way that he was one of the one's "that do more with less". I was always more of a fan of Steve than of Phil.

I have the DVD with the whole In The Round Show and it's nothing short of amazing...I would have killed to go back in time and see the show live for real. Steve is amazing and the whole band sounds phenominal. Yeah there was some mixing done probably after it was recorded/released but even beyond that...everyone is dead on.

The one thing I like the most is how the two players complement each other.

I have seen in the round so much. Makes me wish I was in Denver when it was filmed.

I believe that story about Steve not recording much. It has been said in the past that on Pyromania Mutt replaced Rick Allen with a drum machine for precision. Rick added some real drums and cymbals to make it seem more realistic. At the time it was said that Mutt liked the sound of Human League and thought that drummers were pretty much obsolete due to the perfection of the drum machine.

According to the band, Rick won out in the end, but Mutt made him play everything along with the drum machine and nail everything dead perfect. Supposedly their were lots of broken drum heads and shattered sticks tossed across the studio.

Re: Steve \"Steamin\" Clark vs. Phil Collen?

Steve and Phil most certainly did manage to compliment each other not only in terms of playing live but also songwriting and arrangements as well.

Would Def have been "different" had he not left us at such a tragic early age? Certainly. But as it has already been stated here, there are (were?) far to many other influences to factor in as well.

Like Whitford and Perry, the best twin guitar bands tend to be total opposites and that is the very key element that makes it all work.

I sadly never got the chance to see Steve live but having seen the rest of the lads live many times I can attest to the fact that they do indeed pull off the older tunes really well. Hit n' Run for example is simply brutal live!

Switch 625 is a prime example of power and finesse all wrapped up in one. It may not be the most technical piece to play but like AC/DC it is the perfect example of allowing the song to "hit you and then breath" as well.

That is a lesson that many new players fail to learn...

And as for Phil Collen? He is without a doubt one of the finest players today hands down. He has picked up the styles of Blackmore, Holdsworth, Clark and even the the influence of Mutt (whom he has credited many times) and made them all his own. He knows to restrain when need be and to shred like the best of them as well.

And as a real added bonus he is one of the kindest and most humble individuals that I have ever met. Guitar God aside!

I was at the Denver "in the round" show.It was amazing.Back then, you went to shows for the overall experience. The chicks, thousands of people having a good time, the music, the chicks................and twins! That was cool, they played three shows and filmed all three and use the best footage to make the final product.

I remember they went on the radio and anounced a "contest".They wanted the hottest women to come down to the hotel by mcnicohls arena and the best would get to be in the front row for filming. My ex girlfreind was one of them(she was a big time groupie back in the day).
So, the people that bought front row tickets had been pushed back to 2nd row to accomodate the women they "selected".My ex was the one who, inthe behind the music vh1 special, was standing on the left of phil and pops her top to show her bra.Too bad her personality didnt match her looks.lol.

You Know, i've always been a huge Collen fan, but lately, I am really digging Steve's playing. No flash necessary - just pure style. "Love and Affection" off Hysteria is a cake solo, but the way he plays it makes it phenomenal! I'm beginning to realize sometimes less is more in my old age.

Steve was the soul of the band, no doubt about it.When he died, their recordings without him have the same style, but theyve lacked soul.It became cookie cutter afterwards.Dont get me wrong though, ive bought everything theyve put out and go see them everytime they are in town.I like the latest cd's, i just wish Steve were here to give them the kick in the ass they need to make great hard rock again.

Like Dimebag said and I quote "Nobody is better than anybody". Steve and Phil expressed themselves through music in different ways and together they both made magic. Now it's Vivian and Phil and I can live with that just fine. Different sound for a different time I guess. But I do miss Steve. May he find peace and tranquility wherever he may be.
