Re: Frank Marino

Well, I went to tower.com yesterday to hear some clips of Frank and Uli. They didn't have any samples from the Marino live albums but I listened to some clips from Uli's TSG album and it's awesome! BTW - it's a double CD for $12.99! What about Michael Schenker? What would be a good album of his to start with?

Bill - I understand your frustration with what the media perceives as a great guitarist (i.e. that lame-ass list in Rolling Stone two years ago) but have to disagree with you about mentioning Tom Morello with Wes, Korn, etc. He is a damn good guitarist IMO. BTW - the latest GW has Uli in it.

The first album I heard if I remember was called Mohagany Rush. He played an SG and kicked major tail.

Eric Johnson..I saw him back in early 90. It was the first time I saw him..ah via musicom wasn't out yet...I didn't even own "Tones" at the time....it was before I saw him smoke on Austin City Limits..just like SRV did..

[/ QUOTE ]

1990 was right around the time that Ah Via Musicom came out. I also saw EJ in '90, when he was the opening act on the second leg of Satriani's Flying in a Blue Dream tour. And I distinctly remember already being way into Musicom by then.

That is one of five best shows I've ever seen--EJ tore it up and Satch was absolutely at his peak. Of course, my judgment may have been somewhat clouded, since my girlfriend and I were flying high on Ecstacy at that show...

Re: Frank Marino

Jwoods cool man...

But I strongly disaggree with you sir..

I believe that the likes of people such as Wes , Morello are NOT in my elite list of great players

their fame was only due to image and label / media promotion overdose..and not talent....and NOTHING else

they are the feed that is spoonfed to most..but not I.

I can say this because I know I posess the ability to blow those blokes away without effort...

that is not the case with real players such as Frank , Uli , Ed and so on..they would crush me..along with most of us here..

I will always defend and honor the art of guitar and only those very people that make it great as it is..

OK...screw genres..I'm talkin' pure talent..

Let's take either Wes , Tom or Munky...or whatever assclown you desire and put them in a different format..

could players like Zakk , Loomis or Ed fill the shoes ..learn their material and play it flawlessly ...most likely..

could Wes , Tom or Munky do the same...I sincerely doubt it!

Not until I hear Wes , Tom or anyone learn and play Sails Of Charon or the solo to Mr Crowley..they get no respect from me...

there is a big diffrence between playing the guitar and playing with the guitar w/ makeup on..

Why don't you ask guys like Zakk or Uli or Yngwie how they feel about Wes or Monkey..I assure you it will be not as nice as my words..and for very good reason..

they deserve and earned the right to be a bit bitter..I can't blame them one bit..

In one of the latest Uli release ...their is a very articulate piece of wisdom that he writes that shows exactly the way these guys and I feel about "the music industry" and their fraudulent heavyhitters..such as Wes or Morello..

I take it personal...they are ruining and dumbing down the very thing I love most in life other than my family..it IS ebonics of guitar playing .no less....no more..

This is NOT up for discussion nr debate ...because I am %100 correct in my claims...and there is no changing that!

If anyone would like to claim that Wes , Morello or a munk is equal to the likes of Uli , Frank or Ed...I can only advise to take the dick out of your ears and get a clue..

hell that's like saying Fred Durst can replace Luciano Pavarotti....

But since these is a Frank Marino thread...I will leave with ....Hail Frank Marino!!!

The Bottom Line is ...Talent does not mean or equal to image or popularity....AMEN!

Morello...what the hell....I havn't heard nothing but noise coming from him playing with knobs and buttons..and a whammy pedal..yeah I guess he plays those real good..

Bill I'm right with you on this one
dumbing down is a great way to state it as well.
I'd love to see Morello play a rendition of King Bee, or Red house or attempt something like "sky Overture" or Rondo Alla Turca" (Ok so I started listening to Uli and ya he's all that!)
I can drag my guitar cord against my strings with a wah pedal too, where's my record Deal?
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

[/ QUOTE ] As far as I'm concerned, the Schenker Holy Grail would be UFO's live album titled Strangers In The Night. Another studio release that got me hooked was UFO's Force It. Michael's early work with MSG was astounding but some of the production was "thin." I'm currently listening to Michael Schenker 2000 and The Unforgiven.

Re: Frank Marino

Yes MS does rules...I seen him umpteen times and just recently...not even a year ago (Arachnaphobia tour)...he's great!

OK maybe Tom Morello can "play" the guitar...half way decently ..I would say he is more a sonic innovator than a great guitarist..he's inventive with noise..that he makes with his guitar ..

I think a GUITAR magazines and other crap should focus on GUITAR Players...and leave the popular music BS out all together....unless one of the best happens to be in a pop band..

Dudes like Marino , Uli , Moore (gary or vinnie) , McAlpine , How , Kotzen , Romeo , Loomis ...I can go on forever......!!!!

OK if this was an American Idol BS for guitar players..and each player had three minutes to impress you enough to make it thru to the next level..and you just heard all the guys I mentioned along with friggin' Vai...and then here comes a Munkey...or a Morello..they will look like William Hung..

just my very gay American Idol analogy

Guys like Morello are OK I guess but their fame far exceeds their abilities...much like all the other Paris Hiltons of the gutar world (Dave Navarro).

and did anyone else seem to notice that Criss Oliva wasn't mentioned anywhere in the last "Fallen Hero" GW edition..

and yes I saw Uli in the GW.....screw that ..ULI should be ON GW !!!

No instead we get a Munkey or some other "pop" artist dick..

just because you can write a catchy little ditty doesn't make you a guitar hero..

Hail to guys like Schenker , Frank Marino and Uli ...these guys could never get enough mention...never!!

I didn't mention Schenker earlier because of all of unsung heros.. he get's the most mention..but he is definitely amoung the best!

These guys should be the benchmarks of how great players should be judged.. and all without a whammy pedal!!!

Re: Frank Marino

I still kick myself for not seeing Randy Hansen one night while I was in Duluth. I didn't want to pay the cover. (it would have been cool-but I was working musician and on a limited income)
As far as Schenker albums..as mentioned..'Strangers in the Night' is a great live album from the late 70's.
Studio wise.. 'Essential UFO' pretty much covers the meat n potatos of the best material. I thouht 'Lights Out' was better than 'Force it' or 'Phenomenon' ...MSN music doesn't even list 'Force It' as part of their discography!

Other than that..some of my fav UFO era playing was when Michael did sessions with the Scorps on the 'Lovedrive' album. ..'Another Piece of Meat' rocked and 'Coast to Coast' was the Scorps answer to Nuges 'Stranglehold'.

Hansen NAILS Hendrix..its pretty weird.

Re: Frank Marino

Whoa, whoa, Bill. Don't get me wrong, I'm an old Shrapnel-head (Racer X, V. Moore, MacAlpine, Becker, etc.) and of course the usual suspects - Yngwie, Vai, Satch (ah, that last G3 was soooo sweet). I was just saying that I feel Morello is above Wes, Munky, etc. but I'm certainly not putting him in the league with the others mentioned here. I think your term "sonic innovator" is accurate, he isn't offering anything technically innovating but he has come up with some pretty cool sounds.

But back to focus here. I'm gonna pick up Uli's TSG and one of the Marino live albums (haven't decided which one yet). As far as Schenker, I would like to get an album that has Into the Arena on it. I have an old GFTPM with a transcription of it and always wondered what it sounded like. IIRC, he is on the cover and it also had Suicide Solution live (with Randy's solo!), Roxanne, and Life in the Fast Lane. Damn, that was a good issue. I miss GFTPM.

Re: Frank Marino

I have a vid on file of 'into the arena' but it is locked up tight in another system right now. I saw Michael open for Molly Hatchet & 38 Special. He was supporting the first MSG tour and he when he played that song.. it is a very mood setting tune, but he was just very soulfully on. It was a great show and I thought he was the best act there.
38 special was surprising ripping some good stuff. Hatchet was solid but I was really not much of a fan. I thought MSG took the best set for the night.

He has an album made in '82 for the BBC, but Gary Barden was obviously pretty shot and there are some clunkers hit by Michael on that tune. Not his best.
