Re: dave mustaine vs kirk hammet

Well, I just meant it was a simple design on a one-color background. I doubt it was intentional in the hopes of having a parallel sales record, or else they would have just called the album "Megadeth."

Apparently there was some other artwork done for CW that got scrapped at the last minute. I also heard they had a contest in Brazil for fans to come up with a new cover, but I never heard any more about it.

Re: dave mustaine vs kirk hammet

I would go with Mustaine over Hammet any day of the week.

I also think Vai and Satch sound very very different! Hammet should not be mentioned in the same breath as Satch.

Actually the cover of my "Cryptic Writings" album is silver/grey. What was the deal with the black ones? Were they really any different?

        [/ QUOTE ]
I've also got the silver/gray cover. I think I remember reading it was a limited edition first pressing, I forget how many were made, and then the black cover took over.

You are correct Toejam. Th Silver cover was available for the first 2 months or so then the Black got phased in. I have the gray and 2 of the black ones.

On to the topic! I think Dave is way better than Kirk. Dave excites me! Kirk bores me, simple as that. I listen to Dave and I get hyped up and I love what I'm hearing.

Oh, and comparing Satriani and Vai is just wrong. Vai is miles and miles ahead in every facet of guitar (and tone for that matter). Frankly Satriani has never gotten an emotional responce from me, Vai has, I've never felt the need to see Satriani other than when he plays in town while I've followed the Vai tour for a week once going to every show.

TJ, Vai and Satch are totally different players, they have different tone and sound, vibrato, technical aproach etc. The only common thing is that they both use Lydian scale a lot.

Anyway I think Dave is better overall musician than Kirk, they both aren't very impressive lead players IMO. Kirk has a very shity vibrato and Dave sometimes plays some odd spooky stuff, but he has made some good solos to like 1000 Times Goodbye. Friedman smokes them both.

Re: dave mustaine vs kirk hammet

I prefer Dave. I'm glad he didn't stay in that band. If he had, we wouldn't have Megadeth, who have always made better music. Even when they made bad music.

I currently have a bunch of Megadeth albums in my collection, but no longer have any Metallica. As great as everyone agrees it is, I eventually got tired of MOP

Re: dave mustaine vs kirk hammet

I'll probably get flamed to all hell for this, but the more I listen to old Metallica, the less it impresses me. Lars is a mediocre drummer at best, Kirk's lead are just boring, the songs start to run together, and they buried the best player in the mix. The stuff that Cliff and Dave wrote are really the stand outs in the catalog.

The more I listen to old Megadeth, the more I realize that they were light years ahead of what everyone else was doing at the time. Gar Samulson and Chris Poland did some pretty crazy stuff on those first couple of discs, Nick Menza and Marty Friedman helped Megadeth define a new form of technical excellence in metal, and they buried the worst player in the mix.

Why do we still have this discussion? I don't think anyone is disputing the fact that Metallica was making the music that the metal listener wanted to hear, while Megadeth was making the music that the musicians wanted to hear.

I notice that too... I still absoluetly love AJFA though... I prefer Jaymz voice and tone better too... Metallica was somewhat boring though indeed

Mustaine's rhythm playing rules, but soloing is nothing compared to Megadeth's solo guitarists or Hammett.
So why would Metallica need 2 rhythm players and no solo players?

But listen to the riffs guys, compare the lame Enter Sandman riff to Ashes in your mouth, WHOA, **** off Kirk.

                        [/ QUOTE ]
Kirk never wrote any of the old riffs anyway. James played rhythm guitar, by himself, on every album until the black album. I'm not even sure if Kirk really did play on that one either. James wrote everything and told Kirk to play solos only.

                        [/ QUOTE ]

I´m sure James write and play most rythm guitar in Metallica, but on a Metallica video (one and a half year...?), Kirk tells about when he wrote that E-F riff in Enter Sandman in the middle of the night at a hotel.
So compare Enter Sanman riffs to Holy War riffs then, that´s banality versus complexity.

I also remember reading in an Mustaine interwiev where Dave said that the difference between him and Marty´s solo-work was that Marty plays with a lot of love, while Dave plays with a lot of hate. I enjoy Dave solo-work a lot, but then again I´m not much into all kind of emotional soloing, type Vai/Satriani.

Dave = the man, we are much better off with Megadeth than Metallica IMHO.
Kirk = mindless, soulless, & clueless automaton.

I like Mustaine's solo work better than kirk's for the most part. but I know what Kirk(aka Kirtrina) will allways have over Dave, the ability to paint his finger nails like a little bitch and talking shit about the way bands sell out and how Metallica would never do anything like that. You know like Video's,Hairspray or PAINTING FINGERNAILS.I believe that was said on Cliff Em'All.Not sure if I read it years ago or saw it on an interview just the same HE IS A little BITCH....
