I think Kirk is a much better lead player, he's taken lessons from Joe Satriani, and Satch has said he was one of his best students.

Surely Satch showed Kirk more than how to work a wah pedal.

I thought Kirk did a good job on the one album where he put away his wah-wah pedal. Why he feels the need to hide behind that so much I don't know. Rhythm-wise, though... well, he's pretty much retarded. Check out the deleted scene on Some Kind of Monster where he's having trouble figuring out James' kindergarten-level riff. Man, that deer-in-the-headlights look on Kirk's face will stay with me forever!

Dave woulnd't have lasted in Metallica, anyway. He makes the rest of the band redundant. As we're seeing now with Megadeth.

Dave would have fired or possibly killed Lars, & would never have let Bob Rock take over & ruin his band. He gets my vote.

Hammster for me, especially if Dave is singing. He sounds like Kermit the Frog would if you stuck Kermits balls in a vice...........

Re: dave mustaine vs kirk hammet

I'd have to say I like Mustaine over Hammet although the only lead work of Mustaine I like is on Peace Sells. With that said...Alex Skolnick in his Testament days would crush both of them.

That's funny considering Dave hired Dan Huff. Dave has blamed Dan, Marty, and Ellefson for ruining RISK as well as Megadeth. By the way, didn't he also blame Max Norman for something to do with bpm? Come to think of it, who has Dave not blamed?

Well, I do think Dave is a better technical player than Kirk but Hammett was a huge insiration to me, in the 80's, because he was so melodic. Kirk had that Schenker vibe to his playing that Mustaine always aspired to but never achieved.

[/ QUOTE ]Dave really has no idea what he's doing on the guitar, technically. He even admitted it himself recently and said he started taking lessons, asked the teacher to start from the beginning. The guy thought he was nuts. While Dave said he "knew" how to play, he was self-taught and didn't know theory or really the "correct" way to play. I think Kirk is a much better lead player, he's taken lessons from Joe Satriani, and Satch has said he was one of his best students. I do really like Mustaine and his style, but I've always felt Kirk was the better lead player, Dave was the better rhythm player, much like James. Also, how can anyone not like Kirk... he's got no ego whatsoever. That being said, I've always kinda preferred Megadeth a little more over Metallica.

[/ QUOTE ]Just because Dave doesn't know the technical terms doesn't mean he doesn't actually play better, which I do think he's a far better player than Kirk. Kirk is so generic sounding, and while he's not bad at all he is the most overrated guitarist in metal. If he weren't in Metallica he wouldn't even be considered a top player, and he's in Metallica more for his ability to get along than for his chops, which are really mediocre if you look objectively. He ranks with the Carlos Cavazos or CC DeVilles of the world, not with the Satches or Vais. Satch may have liked him as a dutiful and respectful student, but he doesn't have the chops to be a Satch clone. Dave can sound a bit generic too, but he's much better than the Hamster. His playing on the current CD is pretty damn good.

Re: dave mustaine vs kirk hammet

Dave definitely hired Dann Huff to be his Bob Rock. So I guess you could say Cryptic Writings was Megadeth's "Black Album" (hey, even the sleeve design is kinda similar), and Risk was equivocal to "Load." Draw your own detailed comparisons.

Dave should try and work with Glen Robinson or Roy Z instead.

Actually the cover of my "Cryptic Writings" album is silver/grey. What was the deal with the black ones? Were they really any different?
