I imagine back in the 70s this kind of arguement went on about Ace vs. Jimmy. Whatever anybody comes up with, all 4 guys have become guitar icons, and those who berate their playing are still just playing by (with?) themselves............

my 2 cents on the matter: i will go with mustaine any day because the dude writes good songs. what songs has hammett's written? sure he plays some good solos; but i'll take a good songwriter any day. hammett didn't even play ANY rhythm guitar on any of the classic metallica records. he only started recording rhythms for the load/reload shite.

Yeah, that's because GWAR are some amazing players and write some great songs. Mike Derks (aka Balsac) is a better soloist than Mustaine or Hammett. Listen to America Must Be Destroyed. Derks was the only guitarist on that record.

Anyways. Metallica wrote and writes pop, cheezy stuff, for those who don't know what heavy metal is. Megadeth is different, no matter how much it sucked, occasionally.

i don't care either way. to me both bands are past their glory. there are so many other bands that built on what they started and have eclipsed them (the said bands AND lead guitarists), in terms of songwriting and soloing.

Whatever. If you ever decide to actually listen to GWAR instead of judging them based solely on their stage show, I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised. I recommend America Must Be Destroyed, Scumdogs of the Universe, and This Toilet Earth as good places to start.

Also, Derks had a side project you might also want to seek out, called Koszonom. Very Voivod-esque strange and complex chords.
