• Who's Jake E. Lee? Should I die for asking this?

I've noticed everyone here talking a lot about Jake E. Lee, but who is he? I've gathered that he used to play for Ozzy (before Zakk Wylde?), played a lot of Charvels and had his own ESP sig but that's all so far

The guy between Randy and Zakk...

Whenever I hear the solo from "Bark at the Moon", though, I still fall out of my chair. The guy has a sick legato technique.

You come to a Jackson/Charvel message board, and ask who Jake is?!....Yes you should be burned at the stake, hung, drawn and quartered, and then your remains fed to the wolves....UNLEASH THE FOOKING FURY!

j/k dude....LOL!
His claim to fame was being Ozzy's guitarist for a few years (Bark At The Moon and Ultimate Sin), then leaving and forming Badlands (years escape me).

Sadly, Jake is kind of "the forgotten Ozzy guitarist", since he was only in Ozzy's band for about four years or so--and only played on two albums, one of which (The Ultimate Sin) Ozzy and Sharon have deleted from the catalog to avoid paying royalties to some of the band members.

Just based on his two albums with Ozzy, you'd have to conclude that Jake is a monster guitarist, but later on he also founded a great band called Badlands that put out a couple of really good albums. Jake is definitely a shredder, but he has a great bluesy feel to his playing that a lot of the '80s shredders didn't have.

Definitely an under-appreciated and under-recorded talent, though a lot of that is apparently his own fault in recent years.

I always liked Jake era Ozzy the best. Fantastic player, cool riffs, licks and solos. Pott you just gotta check him out.

Jake was awesome...he had it all, speed, chops, aggressive lead style, and a killer tone!

I saw him at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland Maine on the Bark at the Moon tour.....

Incredible show....I couldn't believe he was that good away from the studio environment.

He pulled off Bark at the Moon flawlessly...which is not a song for the faint-of-heart at that tempo.....and he made it look stupid easy

The follow-on album The Ultimate Sin showed a more mature and refined Jake...but every bit as talented. If anything, he was figuring out his voice and songwriting within the context of Ozzy Osbourne's band.

Sadly...I've never really heard too much from Badlands....I'll have to do that soon

His tone on The Ultimate Sin tour became way to compressed sounding.. it was nice to hear him change that in Badlands

I can't remember if that show came to Portland or not

If it did, I missed it

It's funny really, for the most part, the age of the "guitar god" is over sadly

It was awesome seeing these guitar players in the 80's: Jake E Lee, Angus Young, Van Halen, Tesla, Ratt, Autograph, and pretty much every other 80's band on the FM rotation.

What Badlands albums were/are available

Get Badlands' self-titled album. IMO it's the best of the ones that were released. Then grab Voodoo Highway. I also hear that Dusk is available, though I've not seen it around.

Jake is one of the first guitarist's that i started noticing how well they play. I started to listening to metal at age 12, had the first two ozzy's on vinyle and back then i was all about music. Then in 1984 at age 14 i picked up guitar and that is when i started noticing more. Shame the lead singer from badlands died, another casuality of AIDS! Would have loved to seen how they progressed through the years. He is definitly a great player with his own style.
