Re: George Lynch Video-Mr. Scary lesson

Pick like him?
Not sure what you mean but its not hard to alertnate pick notes. The opening lick/basically main lick throughout, is very good to practice moderate/fast alternate picking. "The way" Lynch alternate picks for the lack of a better way to call it. He's very effiecent at it, and the way he holds his pick hand across the bridge, periodically with his middle, ring and pinky fingers extended out is entirely a different thing.

This part of it, does look odd, and is somewhat difficult to adjust too. This is not flash, using the pick hand like he does has purpose. However, everybody's pick hand is different. I tried years ago to use my pick hand like he does and it didn't work for me. Again, remembering everybody's pick hand is different I didn't bother with pursuing it.

Other players...Demartini of Ratt, Randy Rhoads, Lynch and a handful of others all pick, mute, hold and use the pick hand very much the same. Its noticable in the photo's and video's.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

"Anyone who tries to fling crap my way better have a really good crap flinger."

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

I finally watched it. Even though I LOVE reverb and it's my favorite effect, it was even overboard for me.

But wicked playing though!

George uses a lot of delay etc. in most of his videos.

I guess I should have specified, I tried HOLDING the pick like he does (thumb bent back, middle/ring/pinky spread out). But it didn't work for me. I can certainly alternate pick, it would be a little difficult to play Yngwie or Racer X stuff with all downstrokes.

BTW - I just won this yesterday, can't wait to get it!!

I agree, George has one of the weirdest picking styles I've ever seen. If you've ever seen closeups of his picking hand, you'll notice that he holds his pick at a weird angle too. Most people, I think, hold the pick so the vertical axis is perpendicular to the strings, but George holds it so the tip of the pick is angled back toward the bridge.

Wow...I never really thought about the way I or anyone else holds the pick before, but I hold mine the same way George does. That's just what feels natural to me. Now if only I could make my guitar sound like George's...

Re: George Lynch Video-Mr. Scary lesson

I just watched the video AGAIN to look at George's picking hand. I am quite surprised that I hold my pick in a very similar way and have the other three fingers sprawled out like that, with my pinky "out there" for when I use it to anchor my picking hand to the guitar for added stability and strength (I have a very heavy picking attack).

And this is actually my first time seeing George play!

Same here, I almost have gotten rid of the anchoring, it's really a 'bad form'.

He picks like a typical Berkeley grad although I don't think he went there.

Re: George Lynch Video-Mr. Scary lesson

I don't consider anything "bad form" unless it hurts my hands playing. I've been using my pinky finger to anchor my picking hand ever since I started playing guitar... I started out on acoustic guitar, so to float my hand over the "sweet spot" with anchoring is very effective for accurate picking (for me anyways). Mileage may vary.

I have a LOT of techniques that a lot of "purist" players would consider very "bad form" but I just don't listen to them because I am progressing at a pace that I am comfortable and enjoy, which I consider very important to me in having fun. After all, guitar is just a hobby for me and I have no ambition to perform for anyone except myself. If I had any shot at sharing my music with anyone, MAYBE I'd do something about my technique. Well my DVD came in on Sat. and I watched it yesterday. Good quality and the vids are great! The Guitar Bible one (from Japan) is good and the open jam vid is pretty cool to watch, but the REH one rocks! BTW - does anyone have a copy of the booklet for this?
