Everybody else at my highschool was into EVH. Me, I was way more into Dave Murray. Then I got into thrash (Gary Holt, Dave Mustaine, etc.) about the same time I was discovering the classics (Martin Barre, Jeff Beck, etc.) and EVH wasn't even on the radar for me. Listening to him in historical context, I don't think he was ever really great. He was just a guy with an identifiable schtick, like the guy from the Ramones.

Are you serious?? When he came on the scene he was a REVOLUTION. He sent every aspiring guitar player back to the woodshed for years. His tapping may be a cliche now, something that any 1 year player can accomplish, but he was much, much more than that. He had unique phrasings, cool use of chords, speed, tone...he had it all. Listen to the first two albums, really listen to them. That first album came out when people were busy doing The Hustle, and he was a kid when he made it. Ed deserves the credit he gets and it is tragic that he has tossed his life away. He needs to clean up, get an attitude adjustment, bring out the old equipment and get David Lee back in front of Van Halen. They could sell out stadiums with that tour.

His chops might not seem all that impressive when you compare him to current players, but when the first Van Halen album came out, NO ONE sounded like him. And you have to realize that a lot of today's players sound the way they do because of EVH.

And what schtick are you talking about? Tapping? EVH's greatness goes far beyond that. Listen to his rhythm playing, his tone, his melodies. The guy totally changed the way people look at rock guitar.

Yeah, I think you're saying what I meant. Even though I still think being able to see his entire career at a glance, rather than as each release came out, is *in* historical context. But anyway...

I was raised on the music of Roy Clark and Chet Atkins. Got into KISS and Alice Cooper when I was seven. I was into Genesis, YES, Journey, Rush and Foreigner by the time I was ten. I had one VH single on 45, "Dance the Night Away," which I must have gotten when I was ten. Good song, probably their best after "Beautiful Girls." But EVH never struck me as that big of a deal.

All I heard was his wheedly-wheedly schtick, and all the riffage that he stole from other players (but played with more professional gear than whatever junk the originals had). Sometimes in the cover tunes, sometimes not. He was still lifting even after DLR left and they supposedly stopped doing covers — e.g. the riff for "Best of Both Worlds" is taken from one of the passages of "Roundabout" by YES. I don't know that I've heard anything else since 5150 or maybe OU812.

Well, everyone has lifted. If you play any rock music that is based on the pentatonic scale you are lifting...going way back to the blues legends that invented most of the licks that have been tweaked over time. Sure, Ed has lifted..but he is also an original in so many ways. For me, his rhythm work is what makes him special. Just listen to the intro to "Unchained" or the rhythm sequence of "Aint Talking 'Bout Love", or "Meanstreets", "Everybody Wants Some"..."Panama"...just pick. Those rhythms are amazing and powerful. I think once he changed his tone, he lost it for me. But that is just me.

His solo style is unique in its phrasing etc. I really like the little solo in "When Push Comes to Shove" with the tapped harmonics and the fast/slow modulating tempo.

Ed is cool and he started a revolution in guitar.

Listen to the first 2 albums. His attack or feel or
whatever you want to call it is unbelievable, and it had
nothing to do with the equipment he was using. He could make that old strat scream! He will always be my #1 Guitar hero, even if he is in a bad place now. VH1 changed everything

I'm not saying he wasn't a good player, or wasn't influential. If enough people say he was influential, then hey, he was influential. He just wasn't influential *to me*. To me, he was just a guy in a Top 40 band.

In fact, the only player that I really dig who was seriously influenced by EVH is Dweezil. But Dweezil was a sponge when it came to guitar influences, and he was surrounded by guitar influences aplenty. Lest we forget the guitar god that he also called Dad...

Van Halen was one of three bands that got me into heavy music. Of the three, Van Halen is the only one I still listen to regularly. Every album through Balance was extraordinary in some way (although, in the later years, not the guitar hero thing that we all wanted).

You'd think a guy with that much money would pay people to keep him together, but I guess his demons were just too strong. I'd like to see him make it back, but there's not much hope at this point.

Dweezil has the real Rhasta guitar and the neck on it is one of ed's old boogie bodies necks that he had from way back in the day and the headstock was painted to match (probably at the same time the body was painted) I have video out-takes of Ed smashing that guitar from way back in the day and it has that neck on it. Dweez has a few of ed's old guitars but that is probably the most noteworthy one.
