Funny..Most undeground bands I know NEVER go mainstream..
Not even Cradle or Dimmu...I really can't call that mainstream...
even though you may find thier T shirts in a mall...most haven't a clue who they are..and get NO media support whatsoever..
so ...who are these "underground" bands that you speak...because I don't know a single one..

Lets start of by defining underground for entertainment.
(Underground) Any form of entertainment that draws a following without support from radio and TV or media.
With that definition, every band starts off underground and eventually moves to mainstream, however some bands jump on the band wagon after that style of music have allready made it to mainstream.
With that being said both those bands you mentioned are big on MTV head bangers ball! So in a sense they are a very small part of mainstream (public spotlight). But you also have to remember your underground music and my underground music are two different things. You are metal where i am a bit of anything and everything. Basically groups you are into will probaly never make main stream, because when it comes down to it those groups will never be "Radio Friendly/TV Friendly"
My tastes range anywhere from 50's music, to classical to 80's metal right up to Cradle and pretty much everything in between. I never limit myself to one style of music, if i like the way a song sounds i listen to it and i am not afraid to say that. The one reason i defended limp bizkit that last round with you is not because i am a huge fan of theres, but because they are true to themselves. They might not be your style but when it comes down to it they stay true to what they like, and i respect any musician/entertainer that stays true to themselves, even if i dont like there music. Example would be i am not into satanic music, but i would never put down a band because that is how they feel, i respect there dedication in there cause.
ehhhhhhhhh Sigggy dude , I didn't even read your post really..because , well this is why..
I am THE "METAL" thesaurus here ...Thesaurus REX!!!
I own over 6000 underground metal cds...over 6000 and growing fast!
NONE of them...and I mean Not a one...is mainstream...They are not on the radio...they are not in the 'zines...not on MTV headbangers ball...and not known by most people....except die hard metal humpers like me.
and alot of these bands have been around for 20 years or better...and they NEVER broke into the mainstream...not of my knowledge
Iron Maiden and Judas Priest is the closest thing you can get to mainsteam...and I wouldn't call them "mainstream"...the "majority" is unaware who these bands are...
American Idol...Britney , Snoop Dog , Linkin Park , Alecia Keys..oh yeah...METALLICA...now that is mainstream...because no matter if your 8 years old or 80...they are all over the media in constant rotation 24 /7 ..365.....that is mainstream.
I am not a fan of any this mainstream swill...but I know about all of them..because they are in my face so friggin' much with relentless promotion..
nobody but metalheads know about my music...and quite a few of them never heard most of the stuff I listen to..
so lets talk "metal"...what metal band went from "underground" to "Mainstream"...Metallica , Queensryche..?????
oops..I said "metal"...
This is fact , not my opinions...can't argue or debate facts. Not the last time I checked.
when they start playing Grave Digger , Helloween , Iced Earth , Gamma Ray , Nevermore , Morbid Angel and etc on mainstream radio..I guess I won't need my cds anymore.

Its all good, i kinda consider hitting somewhat mainstream when you see them on MTV/music video channels more then once. As we all know MTV pretty much dictates what is popular these days. so by my definition of mainstream alot of the bands you just metioned have well been played more then once on headbangers ball.
By the way you talking about helloween from the 80's?
I use to be all balls out metal myself, I can still shred like you wouldnt believe. But somewhere along the line i lost my hate and my rebel side, gave up drugs and stopped relating to alot of heavy metal music.
I am the kind of person that has to relate to lyrics of a song in order to enjoy it and keep listening. Trust me this sucks on my part because there are many songs out there i would love alot more if they had different lyrics! I do love the sound of the sweedish/norweigan ( i am about 95% norwegian)death metal, however i just dont relate to the lyrics so i get turned off alot by it. Find me a good death metal style band that sings more about everyday life stuff and i would be all into it. Just put yourself in my place, how much of the death metal music would you like if all they sang about was God and and doing nice things for people!
One of my favorite bands right now is Avenged Sevenfold, great guitar work and i can relate to over 90% of the lyrics. I also love when he sings clean, i think he has a very strong voice.
But latley i have been finding myself going back to listening to alot of 80's metal, i find myself addicted to VH1 Classis's Metal Mania show and seem to be burning the show on DVD's everyweek. And you can tell what i am listening to by my guitar playing latley as i have broken out my shred machines and started shredding alot again.
That's cool man, I'm a sick bastard....so I like dark sick music..
Happy music makes me sad..
well it does...I'm not kiddin'..
That's why I love metal...it is THE soundtrack to my fantasies , my reality , my attitude...my life and death.
and it is my escape..
I only like metal...but I can appreciate other forms of music as well..as a bassist I'm a MONSTER at playing funk/jazz/fusion..
but on geetar...I'm all balls to the wall metal...I don't own a acoustic guitar or even played thru the clean channel on any of my amps...it's not what I do..
I consider my peers in metal style as Dime , Zakk and Kerry King...I'm a mix of all of them ...just a spaz..
I do think there was alot of "punk" bands that broke thru to the mainstrean...especially back in those days..
but when it comes to music , I'm just an old school metal head...and that is all I'll ever be..i guess.
I like some opera...well I'm Italian...so it's natural.

How in the hell did we get from talking about white lion all the way to talking about extreme death metal??????? Damn threadjackers.
or you can get in the back of that long line and bite me....I'm kidding...kinda!

i grew up around the corner from greg d'angelo, white lion's drummer. i remember i was cranking my amps with the windows open to annoy the neighbors and i look out the window and there was the whole band standing on the corner listening to me play as they were walking greg's dogs.i stopped playing and yelled out hello to greg andthey said to keep playing so i cranked it out again for 'em.
Vito was a pleasure to listen to and still is one of my favorite players of all time.
I get sick of most guitarists and don't put their CD's in much after listening to them so many times.
But still when I hear White Lion I just love how melodic he plays, how in control of his instrument he is and the killer tone he has. Guitar playing doesn't get any better.
