• "Dirty Movies" intro

So, what the hell is Eddie doing with the left-side guitar in the intro to "Dirty Movies" (Fair Warning)? Has anyone tried to transcribe it?

Any insights would be appreciated.

Re: \"Dirty Movies\" intro

Like others, I dig the intro too.
Personally, I think Ed's creating his version of a porn track with the intro. Anybody thats watched enough porn in the late 70's and eighties, know porn nearly always had, at the climatic scene, a guitar was playing in the back ground. I think, this is what Ed was trying to do.

Once Mike starts it off with a few harmonics on his bass, Eddie comes in with a slew of random notes that seem to have no structured order or purpose arrangement. However, for the lack of a good way to explain it, he does it tasetfully and manages to pull it off quite well. Again, you have to recall the guitar playing in the back ground of porno flicks. To me, he nails it and sets the mood with this part of the intro. Thus Eddies version of porno guitar.

This quick dispersion of random, tapping, smacking, scratching/scrapping, hammer ons and pull offs, harmonics, of many notes. To me it sounds like he's moving down the neck toward the nut with all these notes. This then gives way to what I call, the star wars RD-D2 robot sound. Very nicely done, very tasteful. He's still is keeping with his porn theme. Its layered, as you can hear the random stuff slowly soften and fade out.

This then gives way to what most ears/listeners now can tell Eddies is taking us somewhere. As it builds up (porno theme) then finally explodes (porno theme) into the actual song itself. This last part of the intro, is pretty basic Eddie stuff (whammy bar stuff and string bending stuff)nothing difficult to learn or do.

To analyze the whole slew of randon notes and technigues he's using in that part of the intro, for me, I never have.
As much as I can hear and pickup on some things and understand what he's doing. I've never had a reason to analyze and learn it note for note. I don't hear that kind of playing in my head to bother with. Don't get me or misunderstand me. Anyone who make an honest attempt to learn all the intro, my hats off to them. Good luck bro.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

"Anyone who tries to fling crap my way better have a really good crap flinger."

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

Yes, there's a bee in the pudding.

Eddie is randomly fucking around with a slide over Michael harmonic bass line ..

he's just fucking around with the slide...then goes into a cool structered slide melody...

I know the right-side guitar is a slide--is the left-side guitar a slide as well? It doesn't sound like it to me. It sounds like...I dunno...little animals crawling over the fretboard or something.

its easily to duplicate...but you can't transcribe it...it is just random slop....it was meant to be chaotic slop...which gives contrast to the the worked out slide melody..

My favorite is the solo from "When Push Comes to Shove", really a neat solo.

+1 for that album, simply an incredible recording.

Mike
Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

You'd think that after ruining his Destroyer, Eddie would have learned not to hack up his guitars.

You know ...I posted my VH stuff here before....John (Cleveland Metal) posted it for me..

Donnie (DRSracing) May have it somewhere...if not ...I would give another copy to John and maybe he could post it again..

it is a horrible recording but you can see we REALLY NAILED old Van Halen...we did VH better than VH live...no shit!

Our singer auditioned for Van Halen after Sammy left..he didn't get the gig because..."He sounded too much like Dave"...that is a fact...it made the local news here!
