After enjoying the new album, I bought Toxicity yesterday. Yeee... kinda hard to listen to droptuned chug-a-lug crap to begin with, but this wasn't even "groovy," if you know what I mean. I like how in the new GW, Daron says that as he gets older he gets closer to standard tuning. Yeah, it's called maturity, kiddo. The foreign sounding vocals was really the only thing to recommend Toxicity, 'cause the song structure just isn't there.

Oh, well. The first few Voivod albums sucked all ass, too, and of course they turned out to become one of the best metal bands in the world.

        [/ QUOTE ]

You can also tell he is maturing, he moved from the basswood ibanez's to useing Gibson SG's! Like i said i just hate that he moved to the marshall Mode 4, you can hear the solid state power section, yeah it sounds good, but he sounded so much better when he was using the Mesa's. I predict he will probaly eventually go back to Tube once he is no longer endorsed by the marshall or he gets sick of his tone from the marshall mode 4. As to tox, i couldnt get into that album either, but damn if you want groove check out the first album, yeah it has sugar on it, which was actually a good song before MTV outplayed it, but the rest of the album also kills and is not as poppy as sugar.

He probaly has that short man syndrome, i think he is a really small guy. I have seen alot of people like him, always having to try to prove themselves and make themselves feel better for what they believe is a shortcoming.

          [/ QUOTE ]

Not all short people have short man syndrome. It used to bug me all the time that I was short, but I've gotten over it. I even forget how short I am until I look at a picture of my 6' friends standing next to me! I'm only 5' 4". I've gotta wonder how they make everybody in a band look of similair height. If we ever make it, I'll have to stand on a box half of the time while the camera is looking at just our top half.

Back on topic now, somewhat. My favorite SOAD song right now is pepperoni pizza. The vocals and sound of the song make me laugh. I haven't taken the time to judge the musicianship (something that I ususally do upon hearing the music), it just sounds so funny! I love the Toxicity album. Sell-out, but whatever. I've got a bad habbit of supporting sellouts!

Up until this last album he was using Mesa Dual Rec's 2 channel and maybe 3 channel versions, the reason i say possibly 3 channel is i know they did a video shot or free show type thing and a riot started and all there equiptment got stolen. Then he got endorsed by marshall after there last tour and starting using the mode 4 (MF350) for the newest album. I can tell the difference in tone, he still gets a good tone but you can still hear it is solid state power section.

I thought he'd always used Marshalls. Crazily enough, I think I like the guitar tone best on Toxicity. The sound seems more menacing IMHO.

I really dig the guitar sound on BYOB both the studio version and the live version I heard on SNL (I think it was SNL). Sounds like straight up Marshall with no effects.
Clear and punchy. It sounded great.

I thought the same thing John. On SNL especially, it sounded very clean, and crisp, not sloppy at all. I think he's using less gain than he used to on the earlier material. It actually sounds a lot better.

He is using less gain, and with the solid state power section it does stay crisper. On tox he still used mesa's as well, he didnt switch over to marshall until this last album. If you listen close enough to him live you can tell it is clear marshall, but you can also tell that it is missing some of the tube warmth. Also on the studio version, put a pair of head phones on and just listen, you can hear it is not tube. But i guess since they are big enough and they mic that he really doesnt need to turn the amps all the way up so it doesnt start to sound like shit like solid state amps are known to do. Dime was the same thing, he used enough of the amps that it never got crappy.

In the studio he used a JMP-100. Or so he says in the new GW. Also said he used a Jackson Rhoads for some parts, "retrofitted with humbuckers." Whatever that means.
please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking
