Re: Cacophony: Who did you prefer?

for me there's no contest, becker all the way! perpetual burn is awesome! marty friedman could have been much better technically if only he sorted out that damn awkward picking style! he's still an awesome player though, i love his unusual sense of melody.

Hmm. I really love Jason's sweeping and arpeggios. But I also love Marty's eastern vibe in a lot of his work. I can't really choose a favorite. Within the band, they complimented each other so well. As far as their individual solo albums, they were both amazing works of technical brilliance. I can't possible choose between the two. Both were/are amazing, just different.

Re: Cacophony: Who did you prefer?

I saw Cacophony twice and as good as Marty is Jason completely blew him away both times. The other thing is I really like Marty's take on the Uli thing but I never thought Marty was very impressive Live. I even saw him play recently at a local guitar competition and he wasn't all that impressive.

Marty had very good pacing to his solos, his Uli influence really showed in that respect as well as the modal thing and structure. I see him as a controlled player... but he doesn't make it sound that way.

Cacophony used to play at Ryans...'the' local hard rock dive. Jason always did the yo-yo thing-it was trademark to the show.
To me, Becker really showed the maturity of his diversity on 'A little ain't enough' Vai, blues, shred,...for a 20 yr old he had a great palette and his Vai/Yngwie influence showed in his timing. Becker was just dripping with talent, he could be so off the cuff sometimes it seemed flippant but you know he was a very serious and practiced player.

I think Jason really learned a lot from Marty, (probably visa versa as well) but Becker had an edge about him.
F-it, they're both killer players.

Re: Cacophony: Who did you prefer?

For me it's definitely Marty, his work done on Cacophony and Megadeth is clearly unique Jason does things great, but Marty makes things "which are great themselves", not the way you do them

Also on marty's site I read something about forming Cacophony, He says that they used to know each other and play together but they didn't think of forming a band. But one they while they were jamming somewhere after something they did together marty decided to play with jason in a band.
He says "that was when I decided to form a band with Jason"

This clearly shows I think that if there is one of them who learnt something from the other it is Jason What MArty could teach Jason is I think only "how to write/compose" good. Because it is clear that technically Jason is better than Marty

Marty himself says "it was Jason who always did the difficult parts in Cacophony"

What I hate about Marty is people considering him a guitarist like "Kirk Hammet" or something, by only looking at his post 90 work on Megadeth. In Cacophony videos it's clearly seen that he can shred to the hell and back, but I think he was never a fan of shredding himself. After Cacophony year by year the difficulty in solos he writes got lower. And know that he technically only plays things ordinary, except his unique picking technique

In his education or whatever videos this is seen clearly too. In 1987 or 88 in his "exotic metal guitar video" he does amazing things in my opinion, things which we usually see from Jason not Marty In his "melodic control" video, which is supposedly released in a year between 92-94 he does really easy things, compared to his potential And lastly he released a "first day with your guitar" video

I haven't seen his last DVD but I think it must be something between exotic metal guitar and melodic control

Anyway, he's the best solo writer for me, and I think Jason has learned a lot from him In perpetual burn cover it writes thanks to Marty Friedman (my impression)...

Friedman never was a shred or metal fan. He has is own thing.
He has influenced me a lot with his orietnal playing and killer vibrato.

Re: Cacophony: Who did you prefer?

I refuse to choose! Hey, that rhymed, maybe I can be a rapper now!

Marty's the reason I even play guitar. When I heard Symphony Of Destruction, his solo is what made me go "Yes, I gotta learn that." I got into Jacksons because I didnt know crap about gutiars but knew what a jackson was from a Megadeth video and had my parents get me that. It's because of Marty wy I pay Jacksons and Carvins.

Marty's so melodic, his phrasing so cool and his vibrato is almost hypnotic to me. What i also love is that he's burning up the neck playing all this crazy stuff but it had a flow to it, many other shredders sounded like and playing card in the spokes of a bike (really fast and little actually going on and sometimes nothing to say). He was the opposite, you felt that every note reguardless of how fast it went by had a reason for being there.

Jason I love too (hey, I have a Carvin just like his!). I liked that his solos had this really aggressive, percussive quality to them. He was playign this really melodic, powerful stuff but the notes themsleves sounded like they were being beaten out of the instrument.

Jason! He is the greatest guitarvirtuoso ever, imnsho.

Of course Friedman is a very very very close second!

I thought Friedman's work on Rust in Peace, particularly "Holy Wars" and "Hangar 18" was incredible. Just beautiful phrasing.

Becker ,although Marty is a monster in his own right.I really hate to choose as they both played off of each other so well ,fast, melodic, middle eastern flavor ,this album had the whole ten yards and then some ,hard to choose.....but I would have to say JASON BECKER. I have to say Becker because of Seranna and End Of The Beginning!

Gotta be Jason. Even Marty admits that Jason is a lot better than him!

Yeah, but what's funny about that is Jason would say Marty blows him away. Must be the "big brother" mentality. Like SRV would always say in interviews he wished he could be as good as Jimmie. When, in fact, he blew Jimmie out of the water.

Yeah, every guitarist in the world (excluding Jared Sipios) would say his idol or guitargod is 5x better than them, even if they're already better themselves.

Im going to buck the trend and say Marty.

Jason was impressive, but Marty just does it for me. Unique phrasing, tone and playing.
