Man cannot contemplate death..we are simply not equipped, cognitively, to comprehend not existing, to contemplate zero conciousness. So, to fill the gap, we invented an afterlife and a ruler of such..then people figured out that ABSOLUTE POWER could be obtained by manipulating people's access to such an afterlife. Bill, I agree with just about everything you say. Except your assertion that people will wise up. No, they won't...if anything they are moving closer to god. To all you wrote above, I would say they could respond with one word, "FAITH". Of course there is no proof, no imperical evidence...nothing to support the existence of god. NOTHING. However, that will not stop people from believing...because they wear their faith like a badge of honor. They will waive it in your face with a superior attitude and heap bullshit pity on you because you won't be saved. I am currently working in the heart of the Bible Belt...Alabama. In the office in which I work, there is a Bible in every room..crosses everywhere. They hold Bible study every Thursday...they all visit internet "Faith" sites. These people are dedicated man. Once they find out you don't believe, they subtley try to get you involved....to come to a Bible study...to be saved.

A woman from my home office is a born again. She honestly believes that only people who have accepted Jesus as their savior will be allowed into heaven. I asked her is the Dali Lama would be allowed into Heaven, she stated without hesitation that NO, he would go to hell. Ghandi, he's toasting right now..according to her. Arrogance, my friend...arrognace. Another way in which these people continue to grow in number and power. With the current politcial climate in the world, and especially in this nation, I do not see an end to this trend.
