Re: New Dream Theater...thoughts anyone?

Is this the same band that wrote Erotomania? Hell no! I was seriously saddned when I first poped the new CD in. Even got to the store early in the morning to be one of the first prog nerds to get it.

What's all this Elton John ballady crap doing on there? Where's the insane? Where's the band that plays a part that makes you go "Holy crap." It's just not there, very by the numbers and by the wrong numbers I might add. It's not heavy and the emotional stuff meant to tug at the heart strings sound contrived and fail at doing so.

I'm not feelin' it boys. This is pretty devastating for me considering I was obsessed with DT for years and have so many good memories wrapped up in this band. From meeting a long time gf at one of their shows to the crazy road trips with buds to go see them in the middle of nowhere.

what he said. 100% agree.

i'd might add that the overall production is just lame, too. fuzzy rhythm guitar sounds, overly dark and muddy lead guitar sounds, lame keyboard sounds, and a horribly fake sounding bassdrum...stupid trigger stuff.

the singing is decent, the leads have their moments (rarely, though), the songwriting is LAME, and so are the riffs. the lyrics are either cheesy or simply not fitting...think "panic attack". possibly the worst possible choice of words one can imagine for the topic..."overwhelmed by this complex delirium"....uuuuuh.

and then this lame ass stupid long octavarium song. when they did acos they really played a song that contained 20 minutes worth of ideas riffs and motifs...unlike octavarium, which basically starts out with 6 minutes of NOTHING.

to sum it up, i'm sooooooooooooooo disappointed by this release it's hardly imaginable. i'm a hardcore DT fan, but this album has the potential to completely turn me away from them. i still appreciate all their other releases, but well, i can't really justify paying 40€ for a concert ticket just to listen to their old material which should be a minor part of their setlist now. especially after the TOT setlist which was GREAT....because of the overall heavier direction of TOT they played lots of old heavy songs like the glass prison caught in a web lie or just let me breathe. now with the new album they are likely going to play more stuff like lifting shadows off a dream anna lee etcetc...the old ballad stuff....uugh (although some of those songs are quite good)

ah, and by the way, did i mention that the new nevermore album is going to crap all over it? and that they're going to kick DTs ass at gigantour?

I can't believe I spent hard-earned money on the new DT. I won't waste any fancy words to describe it--the album just plain sucks. This is coming from a guy who has dozens of DT boots, and saw them...what was it...five times on the Images and Words tour and another three on the Awake tour. They've dropped the ball before, but this time (IMHO) they've nearly pulled a St. Anger.

wow...that bad huh....St Anger is THE benchmark of all things suckable..

I guess I need to spend my money on better things like the new Candlemass , At Vance , Silent Force , Astral Doors , Masterplan , Nevermore..and about a 100 other things I have to get yet..

too much great new metal...such little time..

I still have about 30 cds I didn't even open yet..I should listen to these before I buy more stuff...but I won't.

Nah, it's not that bad. It's very different from their previous work, but I actually like the album. I think it helps if you are into classic prog rock. If you are looking for something heavier, this probably isn't the album for you.

By the way, are you telling me you *don't* have the second Masterplan album yet? What kind of Jorn Lande fan are you, anyway?

Seriously, I don't think "Aeronautics" is quite as good as the first Masterplan album, which I think is simply brilliant--far and away my favorite of the various albums I heard that feature Lande. But it's still pretty good.

St. Anger is very good compared to new DT's album IMO

I'm really liking the album. Sure it's not a shred-fest, but it's good music.

I'm going to pick up Petrucci's solo disc to get some shred on.

Re: New Dream Theater...thoughts anyone?

OK, first time I posted I was too pissed to state my opinion clearly.

The production is not as bad as St. Anger. In fact, it is quite good. There are even good solos in some of the songs. The real problem with the album is that most of the songs are poorly written. Also, the constant psychobabble lyrics got old two albums ago.

Track by track:
1. The Root of All Evil - Falling Into Infinity reject? Completely unmemorable.
2. The Answer Lies Within - A snoozefest of ballad with badly written lyrics.
3. These Walls - Decent.
4. I Walk Beside You - Apparently straight faced attempt at a U2 song...? Bleah!
5. Panic Attack - Not terrible, but I wouldn't want to listen to it more than once. Really dumb lyrics.
6. Never Enough - Interesting--always verging on a train wreck. I think I like this one.
7. Sacrificed Sons - I'm sure that this was meant to be a heartfelt 9/11 tribute, so I feel like an ogre for slamming it--but jeez! It's a a bunch of elevator music slapped together with a long mostly instrumental jam. I'll take the L.A. Guns 9/11 tune 'Let's Roll' any day over this schlock.
8. Ocatavarium - One song and 24 minutes left to the album. What to do? Let's start with 4 1/2 minutes of aimless slide guitar noodling with heavy delay. Chase with 4 minutes of gay ballad. Part two, more gay ballad--at this point I started convulsively hitting the fast forward button and turning an ugly shade of red. Yeah, it gets to a more proggish wank fest later on, but by then I had lost interest.

So, for my $14, I've got about 13 1/2 minutes of semi-decent music. Somebody explain to me what I'm missing.
