There's no reason Eddie's name would be the only one on the patent application if this was a marketing ploy. When they went into production, they could have just called it "The Eddie Van Halen Whatchamacallit."
There's no reason to believe that this isn't his invention.

This is much faster than using the tuner. You can switch in the middle of a song if you wanted.

And there's a very good reason it wouldn't be on there if he didn't invent it: indicating that someone is an inventor when they were did not in fact contribute to the inventive process is grounds for invalidating a patent.

What's up with that weird drawing on the third page of the application? Looks like a new definition for the term "wang bar"...

That was my thought exactly! =)
Hideous drawing too.
I think the last page was a goof. At least I hope it was.

I don't get it. I've already got a TP6 fine-tuning tailpiece on my Les Paul... I just use the fine tuner when I want to drop down to D, that is if I'm really lazy and don't want to drop the normal tuner at the headstock. It's not like using the fine tuner on the tailpiece will make the other strings go out of tune like on a floating Floyd, but I guess for people who like to use it on the fly... whatever floats your boat.
