I have to agree about Kip, he was a total putz. I enjoyed the instrumental part of the music, since Beach and Morgenstein were two absolute monsters that really knew how to throw down. Same thing with Whitesnake and the various guitarists. Ditto for bands like Dokken, Mr. Big, etc. I can tolerate some bubblegum when I'm rewarded with monster playing. But when I get ho-hum playing with my bubblegum (Poison, Warrant, Bon Jovi), I just get bored and turn off. That's why I draw the comparisons to bands like Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Nickleback, etc. Ho-hum playing with bubblegum. It is "commercial angry", "fasionable angry".

In the end, listen to what you want, I don't care. I still have more respect for the people on this board than any other board I'm on, because you guys back up what you say, and think for yourselves. For me, though, there were a lot better bands in that era. Hell, Skid Row could bring the girls, and play their asses off. Win/win.

I listened to a little bit of Poison, but I never really thought that Sissy theDill's - sorry... C.C. DeVille's playing was all that good. I heard a couple of songs from their music and felt that it was too simplistic for my tastes. As for all the other "hair metal" bands, I was into a couple of them. I always listened to the more technical bands. Bands with flash, but also with chops. Lizzy Borden, Dokken, and Savatage were among the top for me back in the day.

I'll probably get flamed more for this next statement than anyone else, but I never really got the gist of Guns 'N Roses. For some reason it didn't appeal to me.

G'N'R did totally different music, they sounded more like a classic hard-rock band (aerosmith, stones etc.) the others wanted to be Van Halen.

Well, like Poison, their music stripped away a lot of what attracted me to other bands. I gravitated to more complex types of music, therefore they didn't appeal to me.

Slash is probably one of the best soloists of the blues/rock genre, and it was great to hear him hit the scene and rip it up. Axl, however, is why I barely listened to Guns. His voice is really, really annoying.

I'm with you, I was always into the more technical bands. I was busy listening to Rust in Peace, while the rest of my friends were listening to the hair metal albums.

About technical stuff, some 80's rock bands were WAY more technical than thrash/speed or prog metal stuff. Lets take Extreme, groovy-funky-FUN-rock music. But Nuno played some of the most difficult rhythm guitar parts ever. Master Of Puppets is a piece of cake compared to some Nuno's riffs.

It kind of got de-railed in there somewhere.
I think the posers killed the Glam metal, along with all of
the other reasons posted here, most are valid. I saw an
"Enuff z Enuff" video the other day and they were complete Poison clones. To me that's what killed the Glam/Hair scene, it became all fluff, The originals, Ratt ,Dokken, VH, etc had some balls and good players.

If I never saw Winger I would have loved them, but once I saw their theatrics it kind of killed it for me, although Reb is a monster of a player.

I thought this topic was about CC. Why bring Poison into the mix. I like some Poison songs. I don't think they killed metal. Seattle and Nirvana killed metal. The economy killed metal, sexually transmitted disease killed metal, Desert Storm killed metal, etc....
Bottom line regardless of what band he was in... CC Deville is a REALLY good guitarist.

Not sure how you can talk about Sissy the Dill.. sorry C.C. DeVille without bringing Poison into it. Don't know about you, but if you mention Sissy, then I think of Poison. Sorry, that's my only exposure to the man. I'm sure it's the same way for the vast majority of us.

nah todd, i won't flame you for that; gnr was a lot more raw and aggressive and that came out in the music. they definitely were not at all about technical ability, but fuck, they could play, and they had some great interplay going on between them. if you listen to appetite, and pan the speakers, you'll always hear very distinct guitar parts, and i thought that was awesome, and learned alot about writing from it. i remember when mtv aired their show at the ritz ballroom in new york, i was amazed; it was a little sloppy at times, but i loved that each guy in the band just flat out rocked their asses off. it sounded like axl blew his voice out somewhat, and i dunno, it was all about reckless abandon, and to me it was just cool as hell. i could relate to it.

i'm the reverse though, in that i can hear things that are technically based and musically challenging, and i'll go right to sleep. it just doesn't strike me the way it does those that like it. i don't mean this as a shot, but i'd much rather hear guys like slash, ace, and joe perry beating the hell out of their guitars in pentatonic land than sit through a satriani song.

when it's all said and done, it's about what you dig. you can't argue personal preference.
