it is not bad to PLAY EXTREMELY technical stuff (the keyword is to play) but it should SOUND simple so more people can enjoy it. That's what Nuno and Reb did, played very difficult riffs but it sounded simple.

Hell, Skid Row could bring the girls, and play their asses off. Win/win.

Now, that's something we definitely agree on!

Well, that was because of Sebastian, he was better looking than most of the girls. FWIW, I think Slave to the Grind was possibly the best album of the whole era. It is HUGE, the playing is killer and Sebastian had, hands down, the best voice of all of them. That album has so many songs that just crush, Monkey Business, Wasted Time, Mudkicker, Quicksand Jesus...it is amazing. I love Skid Row..hell, I even went to see them in some crap bar a couple years back, sans Baz. They were awesome. I love Scotty and Snake, they are way overlooked...way.

Since we have a request to gravitate the conversation back to C.C. land and talk about Posion I will say that when I heard the opening riff to Talk Dirty, I went out and bought the CD. I wasn't sure I had the correct CD, since it had pictures of chicks on the cover...but I bought it anyway. CC had good riffs, his solos were, eh? But I liked the riffs for sure. He was a solid rock guitar player, and quite a freakin' character. I certainly wouldn't call that guy a sissy..he could probably do more blow than any human who ever walked the planet!!! Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

About technical stuff, some 80's rock bands were WAY more technical than thrash/speed or prog metal stuff. Lets take Extreme, groovy-funky-FUN-rock music. But Nuno played some of the most difficult rhythm guitar parts ever. Master Of Puppets is a piece of cake compared to some Nuno's riffs.

OK, now we can agree on something. I used to listen to Pornograffitti and be blown away by Nuno's playing. The lyrics were totally insipid, but Nuno had groove, chops, and style. The rhythm to "He Man Woman Hater" is insane, let alone the sweep excercise that is the solo.

That album totally blew away the first one, and it is so overlooked. The absolutel banshee wail that SB lets fly at the beginning of Monkey Business makes my blood curdle whenever I hear it. That man somehow managed to do what only the likes of Halford can do: sing the high falsetto in an aggressive, metal way.

Mark Slaughter can do a very high falsetto in a very pretty boy way. There is nothing aggressive about that man's voice, he's about as scary as a box of puppies.

Anyway I like Skid Row altho Sebitchian Bach is a serious mofo, he had a very powerful voice.

Re: Bring on the Flaming, why doesnt anyone like C

I guess I am one of the few guitarists around here who can appreciate a guitar player strictly for their chops even if they aren't in the greatest of bands. I guess if CC Deville had joined Ratt we wouldn't be having this conversation. He certainly has the chops.
We could turn this into a positive experience though. This brings up an interesting topic:
Excellent 80's shredders who were in lousy bands.
I don't agree that Poison was lousy, hokey... yes, glam... yes, way over the top... yes. They did write alot of REALLY popular songs. They also had a lot of pretty cool videos. One of my favorite 80's metal video scenes is the one in Poison's Talk Dirty to Me when CC is ripping a solo and just tosses his guitar away. I thought that was very cool.

+1. Slave to the Grind is outstanding in every respect.

I was blown away with "Talk Dirty To Me" when I first heard it and yes, I thought all four Poisonites looked like chicks. A couple of them looked like a couple of my highschool cheerleaders! I bought the CD and learned as many notes as I possibly could and impressed the chicks a little. I was into Slayer and Metallica at the time and ended up gravitating back to them full force, but I still can't deny CC's chops. He was a killer axeman.

See, jgcable, I don't think CC's chops are all that great. He's got that gonzo attitude, but I agree with what was said about him on a VH1 special: CC Deville is the best worst guitar player.

My choice for excellent shredders stuck in cheesy bands will probably piss everyone here off, but here goes: George Lynch. Honestly, what was so good about Dokken? Crap lyrics, horrible vocals, cheesy songs. Then George takes a solo and mops the floor with everyone.

I would respect C.C. more if he wouldn't have messed around with all that drug shit and looking like a Bozo the clown, instead of that he should have keeped his chops in shape, OMFG how sloppy he was on drugs. I don't like that shit.

Dokken was a great band IMO, good songs, good riffs, but Don didn't have power AT ALL, he can sing well, but he isn't a rock singer.
