Re: Judas Priest..What happened?

I am old school too. Sad Wings, Sin After Sin, Stained Class, British Steel, Hell Bent. Some of my favorite stuff for sure. It seems to me they have lost something in the song-writing department. They used to incorporate all kinds of shades and different bits to their music. Some heavy gain, some noisy stuff, some in-between tones, some fast, some slow. They have lost or forgotten some of that variety for me.

BTW, I really liked Halford first solo album I thought that was crushing.

I love all Priest with Halford, no exceptions. I even listened to Rocka Rolla a few nights ago. I, too, think POE is a classic rock album - the songs, grooves and vocals are all top notch. My fave has always been Defenders, maybe because it was my first real metal concert. I had seen many rock shows prior to that, but nothing as METAL as Defenders in 1984.

These guys, in this current line up, can do no wrong in my book.

Maynard is right - these old buggers can still rock.

I like the song Painkiller...I think it kicks ass. I just saw priest last night, and I'm a little fucked off the sound guy gave them a better mix than Queensryche. IMHO Queensryche may not have pioneered the shit that JP did, but for fucks sake, QR is a bad ass band!

One of my big grips in the music business. When i goto a concert i want to hear every band with a great sound mix at all the same volume, I live for live music, they play a chord or a drum beat and you can just feel it go through you, that feeling is just awesome.

My plans are some day to open a small club and every band will get exactly the same sound check, sound mix and power level. The big band will get there respect by going on last and being able to play the longer set.

My second biggest grip in the music business is ticket masters monopoly on ticket sales, but that is another day and another subject!

Re: Judas Priest..What happened?

OK, I'm really gonna go out on a limb here. I am a Priest fan, have been for a long time. Yes, I even like Turbo (you have to admit, it has it's moments). Painkiller was a great album. If you really want to dig up some good stuff, go back to Stained Class. Exciter, Savage, all killer songs. Point of Entry was a great album, but needed a harder edge in production.

Let's not forget British Steel. This album is a classic. It goes all the way from cheese like Metal Gods, to in your face metal guitar with Rapid Fire.

Glen Tipton is a guitar hero. Baptizm of Fire was a great guitar album, leave the lyrics to someone else.

And now the statement that will get me in trouble. I think I like Ripper Owens doing the old stuff better than Rob (ducks flying beer bottles). Ripper can freakin' sing, Rob can scream. When I hear Rob doing Painkiller now it sound like he's trying to "heave a havana" on stage. Does Rob kick ass? Yes. Is he the "Metal God"? Yes...but I like Ripper doing the old stuff live better than Rob. I was always into the guitars anyway.

Did I like any of the Ripper era studio stuff, not really. I think Glenn was trying to hard to make a metal album when he should have just stuck to guitar and leave the lyrics to someone else.

From what I've read, Scott Travis would like to do other stuff besides the double kick all the time, but he is a hired drummer and does what the boss says (boss being Glenn). Painkiller was a break through album, no doubt. But when your lucky enough to have a drummer like Scott Travis, you need to let him do his own thing. Listen to the stuff he does to the old songs. It sounds brilliant.

Thanks, dont' hate me

Not to go off on that drum tangent, but I can't stand double kick drum stuff. To me, it is equally as annoying as that Nu-Metal bass tone that bands like Korn have. I don't want to hear the freakin' bass that high in the mix...unless it is funk.

One example of double kick that I DO like is the drumming on "Mr. Scary". But, for the most part, it annoys the hell out of me.

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

Re: Judas Priest..What happened?

I love Painkiller and agree that Scott Travis gave them a good kick in the ass (or double kick -lol). I was already a fan of his from Racer X (that Scarified beat is just awesome), so I thought it was great news when he joined Priest. I like AoR a lot, it definitely gets better the more you listen to it - Judas Rising, Hell Rider, Demonizer. And if you want a good, non-double kick groove, listen to Worth Fighting For (great riff in the middle too).

Re: Judas Priest..What happened?

I get what Newc is saying, and I think that POE may be the most underrated album in the JP catalog--"Desert Plains" is simply an awesome song, and "Heading Out to the Highway" has one of my Top-5 guitar riffs.

But JP really did need the shot of adrenalin that Travis provided on Painkiller. That was the first Priest album I had liked since Screaming for Vengeance.

Anyway, wasn't Les Binks the guy who really had the chops of doom? I'm not a drummer, but his playing was noticeably more interesting than Dave Holland's metronomic work. Holland is strange that way--the guy played some really interesting funky work in Trapeze and on Glenn Hughes's solo album "Play Me Out", but he seemed to play really boring stuff in Priest. Go figure.

The Hellion/Electric Eye is what got me into metal. Definitely my all-time favorite.
Screaming for Vengeance is where it's at, hands down!
Classic Priest kicks ass all over the place and that's that!

I know everybody here hates Ram it Down, but I have to say I like the guitar action on the title track... flame me all you want now

I loved Tim, also. He's got more midrange in his voice and I think does more justice to the songs. But Rob is great, too, just either high end or low end, not much mids in his voice, IMO. And I thought Jugulator kicked ass, then Demolition kinda blew. And, yes, Scott is the best drummer they've ever had, fits the band perfectly!

I like everything from Priest. Rocka-Rola Sad Wings of Destiny, Hell Bent For Leather and Stained Class are my favorites. AOR is excellent except for Lochness. Its too long and fairly boring. They didn't need to include a 12 minute anthem. Halfords voice is still killer.

What John said. AOR is pretty good and there are songs there that would fit in almost any era of Priest's career with a few more/less effects & slightly different production. But to me Halford doesn't sound like he's quite in top form. Good yes, but it sounds as if he's going through the motions; not much emotion there, not nearly as sharp as he used to be.

Painkiller was my f'n soundtrack for 1990 (well, ok, Empire, Pornografitti , and Detonator were also heavily featured). That was a good year. Don't rip on those tunes, man!

For me, Priest had two bad runs... First, the Turbo->Ram It Down era, which was thoroughly lame self parody. Second, the "Ripper" years. I thought Owens did a good job, but the rest of the band seemed to be just going through the motions.

Considering that these guys started the band in the 60s,

(Priest in 1970 ...no, really!)

what they're doing now is all the more amazing.
