    Re: Judas Priest..What happened?

You may be right about Wheels of Fire--it's been going through my head all day, so maybe that's why I thought they played it. But the posted setlists of other recent shows, on the band's messageboard, don't include it. Even at four songs, they did play a pretty substantial chunk of the new album, which is nice to see. Of the new material, I thought that "Hellrider" came off the best--that one's a stormer.

Thanks for that link! Interesting stuff. For instance, K.K. uses a custom .007-.036 set of strings on his guitars--how does he not break strings or go radically out of tune every time he takes a bend. I couldn't even keep .008-.038 strings properly in-tune, and that .008 would snap every few days.

      Glen also uses thin strings--.008-.038.

I like the old classic Judas Priest. Screamin for Vengence is the last JP album I bought. Unleashed in the East is one of the best live metal albums of all time imho.

I was happy to hear the new stuff, I like AoR. Hellrider kicked ass, I was glad they played it.

Another thing about K.K. they didn't mention on that site is that a lot of his guitars (at least the ones he used at the show) are scalloped. Between the scallops and .007s I have no idea how he doesn't break strings/go out of tune all the time!

            Re: Judas Priest..What happened?

I am long term Priest fan. I started with them around the time of Unleashed in the East. This goes back to the days of disco. I hated it then and I hated it when it had a resurgence. The bands of the era where kind of an antithesis of that crap just as I am hopeful a resurgence of Metal kills cRap music today. May the Priest lead this charge.

Some of the favorites include Unleashed, British Steel, Screaming for Vengeance and yes the mighty Painkiller. I stayed with Halford through the somewhat lean Fight years...no Voyeurs/two (whatever it was) for me though. There was a Mutations effort which I listened to rather than country of the same era.

I have seen them in concert on the Turbo Fuel for Life and Painkiller tours. The intro to Out in the Cold is forever etched in my somewhat fading memory. This was a phenomenal entrance. The band begins, Halford starts singing and then slowly walks on stage shortly thereafter. A simple entrance that drove the audience into a frenzy. I have yet to see anything like it....if memory serves this is immortalized on the JP live DVD and possibly Metalworks DVD.

As for Tim the Ripper, the acoustic rendition of Diamonds was riveting (no metal pun intended) and this from a fan who likes the original of Unleashed so much that I made it a point to seek out Baez's rendition (which if memory serves differs slightly lyrically from the Priest version).

I regret that I have not seen them play one of my favorite songs live...Between the Hammer and the Anvil. This is one of my all time favorite dualing lead guitar attacks between KK and Glenn or for that matter anyone. The title of Screaming for Vengeance comes to mind here as well and Victim of Changes although I have seen them play these live.

In a bit of a peculiarity...I had always hoped that United would emerge as anthemic during the period after the 911 attacks and the strife thereafter. If not the whole song certainly the chorus.

At any rate that is my 2 cents on the Priest. As well I don't care how offbeat their videos were of the era...they are still the Priest. AOR is a good effort and Judas is Rising will hopefully be a rallying cry back to the glory days of Metal.

Judas Preist is GREAT, but everything after Defenders can kiss my ass.

Screaming and Hell Bent are two of the best albums.

Unleashed and Hero, Hero are two of the best (non-Album) releases in music existence, IMO.

Judas Priest were pretty good live last year. Rob is the best frontman for the band. I'm not a fan of Scott Travis, but from what I understand Dave Holland has some serious personal troubles.

AOR was a much better album than the Ripper Owens ones. JP would be great if they played Jacksons...but then again..how can you argue with this:
