Re: Shadow\'s Fall The War Within

My personal opinion.....War Within sounds like they've picked up where Of One Blood left off, with a cleaner production...I've been into them since their beginning (Somber Eyes To The Sky)...and have since became friends with them. I haven't missed an NJ date they've played since they've been touring. Of One Blood was a great record, but very raw and sloppy. I like the cleaner production....they've definitely evolved!

I've had this album for a while and think the music kicks ass but the vocals are so-so. Sometimes they're fine (What Drives the Weak) but others are too cookie monster (Power of I and I). Still, I like it overall and listen to it a good bit.
      Unleash the fury.....Texas style!

I'm not really a thrash metal guy, but I really dig those tight, technical rhythms that are going on, and the minor 3rd harmony stuff. They shred it up during the solos too. I'm sure that learning a few of those tunes would help the chops tremendously.

I saw them live when they opened for Priest. I agree. The music kills, the drummer REALLY KILLS, the singer is pretty aweful.

              Me too

Shadows fall is a good enough band but I just get sleepy when I listen to them... the vocals don't bother me the music doesn't bother but nor does it make my jaw drop

Man, i Love Brian Fair's vocals! He's prolly one of my favorite of today's metalcore vocalists.

I will agree that its a different feel than ytheir last two albums. I wasn't big on Art of Balance, but loved Of One Blood. i think they went for more of a "rock" approach on this record, and not too much of the thrash, though, you'll get plenty of that in the mix too. and i think bachand did an awesome job with his clean vocals.

                but thats just my opinion!

Re: Shadow\'s Fall The War Within

yeah...matt sounds A LOT better on this album than he does on of one blood...thats for sure.

i dont hate the new one...i just wanted something different you know. i miss the trash...i miss their faster stuff. the new album is just real cookie cutter...verse chorus typical structure and i didnt think thats where they were headed after the art of balance.

they're still better than most though...and the war within is WAY better than killswitch's new album and jon donais is becoming a modern day guitar hero, which is cool because he's definitely worthy.

i dont know if any of you guys have heard all that remains...you might want to check them out. they've got the original shadows fall singer, the guy that sang on somber eyes, and i love his voice. they're a metalcore band as well you know...swedish inspiried riffs, clean vocals, breakdowns...but i think they do it really well.

All That Remains, hell yeah! I saw those guys on Headbanger's Ball, the video with them out in the southwest just throwing down, and fell in love with it. The drummer is brutal, and has one of my current favorite kick drum tones.

when i first got All That Remains' album when it first came out (because i dug Somber Eye's to the Sky), i listened to it for a while, then not for a long while. now, its become one of my favorites of the past few years. dont know about the drums tho. i've never liked the way Adam D. from killswitch records drums on the albums he produces. Unearth i think made the best record of last year hands down, but with a cooler drum mix, i think it could of been even better.
IMO the War Within is great. Of One Blood was great too at the time, but damn, how can anyone get past that production? even Jon Donais says he'd like to re-record most of the better songs on it (namely the title track). that i'd like to hear!!

I love the way Adam records kick drums. Sure, they may be a little too up front in the mix, but they've got this thick, live sound to them. They don't sound like your typical triggered clicking that most metal bands have these days.

Me too. When I saw them he had a neck brace on. Holy crap did he kill on the drums. His feet are brutal and the kick drum tone was crushing. For me, the band could have left the stage and just had the drummer finish the set.
Seriously, I thought Shadows Fall killed. I am just not a fan of that style of vocals. Their music seemed too good for it.

Yeah, I kinda miss the old vocals, too. The constant screaming thing doesn't really do it for me, although the dude from SF is a lot better at it than most.

yeah, its a lot more enjoyable to listen to than most. with all these new *metalcore* groups popping up, there are some pretty bad ones. and a bad metalcore vocalist is REALLY bad.

Like every vocalist from southern California? God, I really hate the vocals on stuff like Atreyu, 18 Visions, etc.
