Ahh, B.S. I could get "Enter Sandman" with my Peavey TransTube Studio 112 and my Strat Neck Pacer. Tune it down, scoop it a bit...it is all in the EQ.

Tune what down? Enter Sandman is standard tuning. Not to mention the fact that EMG pickups would really help... 81/81 like Kirk (James used to use that setup, too) or an 81/60.

I wish it were so easy Mike.

For FWTBT you'd need a modded JCM 800 horizontal input with a tubescreamer in front and an EQ in the loop.

Here I am playing FWTBT at MetalJam:

Re: Metallica\'s sound

i can get the basic sound from the Load album with my rivera's. i like the tones off that album the best. kinda bluesy, kinda classic rockish, but still heavy. a lot of meat in their sound on that album.

racer x i used to have the same rig as the ADA mp1 through the peavey power amp. GREAT sounds in that rig!!!
GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

I like the tone on And Justice for All. That is all.

The tab had it tuned down either a half step or a step..I don't recall. I know that I tuned it down, EQ'd my shitty little amp and produced 95% of the same tone. It wasn't perfect, but it was enough to impress a 15 year old who listened to the album ad infinitum.

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

That's strange you've seen the tab tuned down. It is in standard tuning... I remember learning it that way and playing along.
I've even got the tab book for that album, and it is indeed tuned to standard.
Sad But True is a step down. Don't Tread On Me is 1/2-step down, The God That Failed is 1/2-step down, everything else on the album is tuned to standard.

Re: Metallica\'s sound

Maybe I was playing Sad but True...I did learn them both to teach her. It was 5 years ago and I don't do Metallica stuff too often. If you have the book, I am sure that you are correct and my memory is fogged by too many Martinis.

I stand corrected!!!

Re: Metallica\'s sound

I heard for the black album they used Mesa IV's for a preamp running into the 295's for output.
