i bought the cd cuz i only had countdown to extinction and i wanted more megadeth song so i bought the greatest hits cuz i didnt know wat songs were good and i wanted to know more megadeth songs.

Megadeth was still fucking awesome live, but it was more because of Dave than anything, really.

Glenn did not hit one soulful note the entire show, and he could not in the least bit touch Friedman's playing, and his godlike vibrato.

We're not bashing you, just Dave, his attitude, and all the people has shit on.

The best place to start for you is Rust In Peace. Most everyone will tell you it is the best album Megadeth ever recorded, with no close second. Most will also tell you it is one of the finest thrash albums ever, and it has influenced so many bands that it isn't even funny.

Here is my quick review of them all:

Killing is My Business (and Business is Good!): Angry, raw thrash metal with jazz fussion thrown in for good measure. This album absolutely blew Kill 'Em All of the face of the earth. At times chaotic and difficult to follow, with not one pretty thing about it. Definately the most ambitious debut of the four major thrash acts. Gar Samulson's drumming on this album is beyond unreal.

Peace Sells, but Who's Buying?: A lot more mid-tempo stuff, with cleaner playing and stronger song writing. Chris Poland absolutely owns on this album. If you live the heavy chunk mixed in with your thrash, this is the album to get.

So Far, So Good, So What: Totally hit or miss. Half the songs are really, really good, with amazing song structures and a foreshadowing of the more technical playing to come. The other half range from so-so to the complete crap of the "Anarchy in the UK" cover.

Rust In Peace: Progressive songwriting, unreal playing, amazing guitar solos, jaw dropping breakdowns, and in your face aggression. There is not one bad thing I can say about this album, it's perfect.

After Countdown to Extinction, it all started falling apart. Youthanasia is like a watered down Countdown, Cryptic Writings is like their version of Load, and I don't even want to talk about Risk. The World Needs a Hero has a few good songs mixed in with Cryptic Writings styled crap, And The System Has Failed is actually a suprising return to form on most of the stuff.

Mustaine himself told me Ellefson wasnt the first bassist. He did mention the other guys name, but i cant recall it. Sorry.

Anyway, the main point being that Mustaine writes/wrote nearly every Megadeth song singlehanded. They arent all solid gold, but if you look at the contributions of others throughout the years and compare it to Mustaines, its insignificant. Bottom line is that he doesnt need David, Chris, Marty, Nick etc. For the most part, they needed him and still ride on his back even now

That is really funny to say especially about Chris and Marty. Because they are just as much respected as Dave both in the metal scene and music in general.

I hate to say it, but Chris was virtually unknown before Megadeth, and Marty would have been just another 80's shredder, lost in the mix when the shred boom died, if it wasn't for Megadeth.

I always thought Dave's strong suit was in finding and polishing up raw talent. Marty's rhythm work grew leaps and bounds under his tutelage. Chuck Behler was a drum tech, and so was Nick Menza. Chris became a highly influential metal guitarist by virtue of being in Megadeth. A whole new breed of metal players talk about his solos on those first two albums.

Hang on there! Marty might not have been as famous as he is nowadays, but the musical genius was already there. And he would have grown out of shred and developed into this experimental range of music, where he still is, regardless of being under Dave's tutelage or not. I'm not denying Dave had a certain influence on Marty, but saying Marty needed Dave to grow as a musician, is imho, a gross exaggeration.

I'm not saying Marty needed Dave, I'm just saying that being in Megadeth did a lot for him. He really wasn't a rhythm player before, and who knows what he would have gotten into later if he never joined Megadeth. He said that playing in Megadeth for so long burnt him out on metal, and he wanted to get into something different. Who knows if he would have wanted to go more pop if he hadn't been so metal for so long. And Marty has said in several interviews that Dave taught him to be a great rhythm guitarist.

I think it goes the other way, too. Dave became much better, simply by having Marty around to help him on things. His solos on RIP and onward sound much more focused. Dave has said in several interviews that Marty helped him imensely when it came time for him to solo, pushing him to compose something that made a statement, rather than the random pentatonic wanking he did in the past. I think it was an equally profitable relationship for both parties.

Being that he didn't even play rhtyhm on those albums, yeah, I'd say it was his solos. Honestly, did you find Chris on his own first, leading you to his work in Megadeth, or the other way around.

The guitarists in Lamb of God talk about his solos on those first two albums with an almost worshipful tone. The solo he takes on Ashes of the Wake is like Good Morning/Black Friday, only much faster and more precise. His solos on The System Has Failed are more of the same. Honestly, I could just listen to the man solo all day long. He's so unique and tasteful, but then he'll just nail you with oddball runs played disgustingly fast. He is too often overshadowed by Marty, IMHO.

I wish I had a dollar for every article I read where Mustaine was praising Pitrelli. But the key comments revolved around the fact that Al was a "true rockstar." Dave made numerous comments about his hard drinking, heavy smoking personna. I'm sure Al was willing to accept some management from Dave, like how to dress and stay clean shaven, but I bet Al drew the line in the sand after that. And we all know, Mustaine wants TOTAL control. So Al was out!

Can't have a smoker/drinker/cusser affecting the good Christians in the band.
