Good album, but "Beast Over Hammersmith" is a far superior show. It's available on the "Early Days Part 1" DVD and the "Eddie's Archive" CD set.

I haven't heard that one, but I'd like to! The only problem is that my two favorite Maiden albums are Piece of Mind and Powerslave, so you can probably understand why I'm so fond of Live After Death. I love how they put their World Slavery Tour itinerary in the gatefold of LAD--jeezus christ, they were on the road for almost two years on that tour, with not many breaks!!!! And to have to come out every night with the blitzkrieg opening of "Aces High"/"Two Minutes"/"The Trooper"...wow. That's some pretty intense shit. They must have been exhausted after that tour.

I love Live After Death - It's so tied to me being 12 and my early teens it's not true! However, I can't believe no-one has mentioned Ozzy's Tribute.....

        [/ QUOTE ]

I love that one, too! To me, it's the only entirely satisfactory live album that Ozzy has done. Brad Gillis didn't do the Sabbath material justice on Speak of the Devil, in my opinion.

I was really disappointed in the Sabbath "Past Lives" set, because it was mostly Live At Last plus stuff that collectors already had, such as Paris '70. The real gem on Past Lives was a couple of tracks from a King Biscuit Flower Hour show they did on the Sabotage tour in '75. I have that entire show on mp3, and it is simply stunning. Why didn't they just release that entire show on "Past Lives" and skip all the Live At Last stuff, which they didn't even want released back in the day?

Another live album I love is Deep Purple's Made In Japan. The "Highway Star" opener is a real scorcher, and the entire set was just balls out, especially compared to their relatively tame studio albums. Also, in a similar vein, I love Rainbow's On Stage album--Ronnie James Dio and Ritchie Blackmore at their peak.

I'm on a big Nevermore kick, and I'd love to hear a live album by them--I bet they slay live.

Maiden's Powerslave tour was my first show ever, so that DVD holds a special place for me. What a great show. The opening act was Accept.

As for concert DVDs in general, I'm partial to Rock in Rio, Rush in Rio, Live Without a Net, and all the G3 shows.

I think I wore out three copies of Live After Death. Those extended length cassettes didn't hold up well. One of my favorite albums, period.

I agree. I used to live in Pennsylvania and would frequently drive back home to Maine for visits, about 8 hours each way. Before I left, I would always designate the "Iron Maiden Time" and would play the cd at that time. Great way to kill an hour and a half of the drive. Love the renditions of Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner and Hallowed Be Thy Name. Obviously, the best sign of a great band is how they sound live- Maiden is definitely a great band.

Ha! Among 2 friends and myself, we bought like 9 copies of that damn cassette! I wised up after the 2nd copy snapped and bought a relatively new-fangled thing at the time called a cd (my first). I still have it and it hasn't worn out yet!, though I had to pirate the Hammersmith set to a 2nd cd since the original cd didn't contain that set (Phanton, Die with your boots on, etc).

Yeah, I think that's the reason I switched to cd too. I've got the cd now with the whole thing on it. I think I originally had to buy it as an import. I'm a little disappointed at the setlist for Ozzfest. I was hoping they'd pull out a few more that they don't usually do live, like 22 Acacia Avenue, Die With Your Boots On, and maybe The Prisoner. After seeing the setlists for them and Sabbath, I'm not sure I want to drive six hours to see it.

                            Re: Live After Death

bill, we just can't agree on tone.

rock n rio sounds like utter shit. muddiness does not = heaviness or good tone. there is no clarity or sweetness in the guitar tones on rock n rio. everything sounds dull and lifeless except for the drums and vocals. which is typical of modern production and fools poeple with its use of the term "heavy sound".

the best maiden live sound, performace, song choice, and overall entertaiment (to me) is Maiden England.

for a live show the production is awesome! both guitars are loud and clear and have their sweet singing sound. while the drums and vocals are still crisp. all the while the whole mix sounds huge - like it should sound in an arena!

rock n rio sounds "dull" and small compared to maiden england. if you put a sound clip from each up here - everyone would be able to hear exactly what i'm talking about.

I have to say that I most definetly LOVE Maiden England. THAT was the first concert that I ever heard of Maiden and b4 that I only heard SIT (by the was thats a killer album). The song selection in Maiden England is superb. They play songs from Piece of Mind that you can't see in past concerts and thery-re played rock tight!!!

For me its a must for any maiden fan to see the Maiden England conert. It will be on DVD on the second part of the Maiden DVD sets.

                                PS:
In that other set of DVDs you'll be able to see a concert from the SIT album, that has never come out in any way, that is what i'm expecting more to see from those days.
