I don't think most bands out there are doing their stuff tongue in cheek. How many bands out there actually have something not-retarded to say? Dio sings about Rainbows and Dragons, Mustaine is like the heavy metal Bono with his retarded rants, the death metal guys grunt and growel - who cares?

The only guy that had something to say I cared about was David Lee Roth. He wrote lyrics for a lot of situations.
<ul type="square">[*]Getting laid - well, that'd be most of them but he did cover lots of different ground from teenage teacher lust to beach trolling for babes[*]People in moments of crisis - if you're on the verge of suicide you "...might as well...JUMP!"[*]dreaming the impossible dream - "I'll Wait" is a great example of this[*]hmmm...ok, so maybe the songs were just about getting laid...
You are correct, and you actually made my point for me. I like rock and roll because I like to have fun, and listen to songs about having fun, getting laid...etc. Van Halen is the epitome of that. I don't want to listen to tunes that talk about conquering the devil, temptation, etc. I don't like death metal either, or thrash or speed. When it comes to metal, which is only one form of music that I like and listen to, I like '80s hair metal.

I can't stand Stryper, and my opinion has nothing to do with their message and everything to do with lame songs and overblown, sterile performances.
I don't want Dennis DeYoung yelling at me in a hard rock context!

To further expand on this, Bob Halford has been singing about banging guys since the 70's and I didn't pick up on it until he came out.
Bruce Dickenson sings about war and battles and history and ancient stories and books.
Kip Winger sings about banging underage chicks
Melissa Ethredge sings about banging chicks.
Sammy Hagar sings about partying
Who cares if Stryper sings about religious stuff.

I'm out on this one. I guess I am the only one who thinks that religion + rock and roll = shit.

I also feel that it is a sneak attack...we will hook you with the catchy tunes..and then slip in the lyrics in a hope of influencing you. All rock and roll should influence you to do is party.

That is my last take on it.

rock and roll has nothing to do with getting hit in the head with a tiny bible after a show.

Guys, say what you will. When I saw them on the last tour, Michael Sweet could still sing like a champ. Not to mention he is one hell of a guitar player. Michael Sweet and Oz Fox can do harmonies as tight as anybody. Oz Fox is a mad man on stage. If you like metal, and you like guitars, you will not be board at a Stryper show. It is an all out, 80's metal, guitar fest.

Dude, I was born in 1970. I got to enjoy Stryper polluting my MTV the first time around. They can play, I am not disputing that...but man, the songs fucking suck. "To Helllll with the Deeeeevilllll"....Oh, please..fucking SPARE ME. I don't know what I get a headache from quicker, the damn lyrics or the overwhelming sea of black and yellow.

mike, whether or not you meant it, THAT's fucking hilarious! AND, I went to see Stryper in 1984 at Wolf&Rismiller's Country Club (Reseda CA w/ 94.7 KMET) on the Yellow and Black Attack EP, AND on the Hell w/ the Devil show at the Pomona Valley Auditorium 1987 (Loudness and Akira Takasaki ripppppping them apart as the opening act). Robert Sweet is an animal on the skins and Tim/Oz/Mike can play. BUT either way, you're too funny!!
