Re: Iron Maiden Strats

Nah, the 57 used to belong to Paul Kossoff (it's on the back of the'Back Street Crawler' LP).

Dave Murray had 2 very similar strats - the 57 with a maple neck, and a later one with a rosewood board. The rosewood board guitar had a chrome Kahler added to it, but I've never heard of the 57 having a floyd fitted to it?

Dave kept the original scratchplate and pickups so the guitar could be visually restored, so I'd be surprised if this guitar was ever Floyded, but I guess you never know - last I heard it had been retired.....

Both these black strats are used in the Live After Death concert VHS.

PS As far as I know Adrian doesn't use JB Jnrs: His Floyd Rose Classic strats (sunburst and cream) both have the std pickups - Dimarzio h/b and Fender singles?

It is also interesting to notice that in these days he was also using a late '70s Gibson SG custom with three humbuckers, two of them (neck and bridge, of course!) were DiMarzio X2N, this brings to the conclusion that he uses the same pickups for bridge and neck position, therefore the two hums on hi strat should be a couple of super distortion.

        [/ QUOTE ]

I dont really agree with your reasoning that because one guitar has the same pickups (in bridge and neck) that all of his guitars must In the back of the dimarzio catalogue, Dave is listed as using super distortions and PAF's.

        [/ QUOTE ]

True, but it's also written that Ace Frehley used super D and PAF too...

I think he uses the same pickups for the front and the bridge, ancd by the way I always found the PAF too weak to match a SD, while this pickup works well aslo in the neck position...

the SG custom was used in the early days.. never later AFAIK

and the 57 strat was NEVER.. read it from mylips.. NEVER fitted with a OFR

it is sitting in a glass case in daves home in hawaii
you must mean the rosewood black strat.. THAT one had the tremolo replaced

adrian's 'lone stars' have dimarzio PAF's in the bridge and stock single coils (which he admits, sound shite)

Yeah, I agree on the 57, and I'm pretty sure the rosewood board still has the Kahler on it....

Not trying to be Mr Picky here, but Adrian's strats are not lone-stars. The Lone-Star strats had a pearly gates in the bridge, pearloid gaurd and std trem.

Adrian's current main guitars are 2 USA Floyd Rose Classic strats from the mid 1990's in cream and 3 tone sunburst. These guitars came with an OFR, maple or rosewood boards, Dimarzio h/b, Fender singles and vintage tuners....

oh yea nelli.. forgot that tiny detail.. it's just that i'm used to call em lone stars =P

but are you sure they had a normal trem? as i recall it, they had a floyd.. but it's years since i actualy saw one around these parts

                    In response to Cuthbert...

I never saw much Adrian Smith influence in the Fender Maiden Strat. The maple board, trem, and Hot Rails all point to Dave Murray, while Janick Gers is a JB Jr user. Who KNOWS where the friggin' basswood body comes from. Didn't this model get released right around the time Adrian rejoined the band? Maybe Dave and Janick specified this guitar and it was already in production by the time Adrian rejoined. I don't know... I'm just speculating.

Lately I'm really finding myself disgusted and frustrated when talking about Maiden history, especially since Dave and Adrian were such gear whores. Fans will keep debating for a long time. At least Steve's Fender Maiden signature P-Bass had his own input only...

Also, talking about Dave's H/S/H pickup configuration, was he the first to do it? It's arguable that Steve Vai POPULARIZED it... perhaps that's why you see it on many Ibanez guitars.

dave had much to say on that axe.. specificaly on the neck profile and the fretboard radius
but the pickup choice was left to jan. why he chose it i dont know, but i'm not arguing it. i like his rythm tone a bit better than murrays, but murrays lead tone is the ultimate benchmark for me.

as for adrian having little part in it, no idea.. the axe was in production the year BNW was released and for one year only
(the basswood body eludes me too)

heh.. only god knows what's in their collections.. the things we see them use live is just the tip of the iceberg.
after reading the DoD diaries, i know dave has a VERY old les paul, which could very well have the original 57 PAF's in it.. used it to record the lead on Rainmaker

i havent seen anybody else use it before dave did. but being born in '82 has it's drawbacks (even if it was IMO the BEST year for metal ) and i couldnt get my greedy hands on any of the earlier bands that could've done the same
wouldnt be surprised if dave indeed was the pioneer in the HSH setup

The Floyd Rose Classics had a PAF Pro in the bridge. Later Fender stopped using the PAF pro and went to a Fender pickup. The pickguard was changed when Fender changed pickups also. When Fender was using the PAF pro the hum cutout on the guard was scalloped and followed the contor of the two coils of the pickup. When Fender went to the Fender pickup, the pickguard cutout was changed to the normal rectangle, and had 3 pickup mounting screw holes.

Dave also used the '57 strat in the Maiden England video when he plays Heaven Can Wait, and in ther you don't see it with a floyd or a kahler, it was still with the original bar. Don't think we would put a floyd after that.

if you still want pics of one of the 2001 maiden sig strats here is mine before my mods and after...

                            before mods...

after mods...new guard and a tone zone for the bridge...

i just didn't get along with the JB jr or the middle pickup and 3 knob layout so i went with the tone zone since it's basswood and the guitar came alive and is my main floyd equipped guitar (so far). the neck is just amazing on it! this is one of my guitars i'll never sell!
