• Gary Hoey Show

I saw and met him at his show in Baltimore last night. What can I say but the guy rips. I happened to be one the more enthusiastic fans so he gave me a pick. I guess being a guitar player makes you appreciate how good he really is. The other people I went with were looking at me like, what's the big deal. He switched between two Fender strats the whole show. He used the same gear that he has posted on his site. Nothing flashy. He's just a great guitar player and down to earth guy.

    +1

Kristi and I saw him at NAMM (quite a few times) and then a couple of days later when he was here in Chicago. He's a phenominal player and an extremely nice guy.

I saw Gary at a club in Sacramento in the late 90's and he was awesome. Great player. He was using Hamer guitars att the time.

A totally cool guy who does indeed rip. He has played in studio here a few times.

            Re: Gary Hoey Show

I used to take lessons from Gary. We were good friends until he tried to steal the Dio gig from me. I remember Ronnie asking me if I knew Gary during my audition and my answer was "yeah, he's a good friend of mine". Dio's response was "that's what you think". Apparently Gary was pissed because I got asked to audition and he didn't, so he took it upon himself to tell Dio that he was the teacher and I was the student, so why should I be auditioning? Dio was pretty turned off by the way Gary acted about it.

I give him credit though, he's the somewhat famous guitarist and I'm standing behind my counter selling gear.

              Re: Gary Hoey Show

I was talking to Gary's bass player after the show last night and he made a comment that struck me as kind of funny. He said "Tonight I'm up on stage playing with Gary Hoey and next week I'll be back at my job". Of course I'm thinking guys like him are having the time of their life living the rock and roll dream. So I asked what do you do for your regular job? He looks at me and says "I frame houses". I thought to myself, that has got to be such a let down. Not for the type of job he does but to go from playing with a semi-famous guitarist and seeing some cool places to going back to a regular shitty job.

Gary actually lives in a town over by our very own KMaynard. Every time I'm there at NAMM when he and Gary meet, they're always talkin' about the neighborhood. Hopefully Kev will send Gary an e-mail and they can jam sometime. (hint-hint Kev)

I'm a big fan of Gary as well. Hopefully the next time he comes to Houston I'll be able to meet him. I still listen to Animal Instict on a daily basis and still am blown away by it!

                          Re: Gary Hoey Show

Gary Hoey is a great player. He was a judge at the Guitarmageddon district finals in my area. It's funny cause, on the way there, me and my friends were talking about guitar players and his name came up. We didn't know he was going to be one of the judges. So, it was ironic that we were bringing up his name and an hour later there he is. Needless to say, I was a little more nervous playing in front of him.

That's a really funny story man! I think it hits home with me even more because Dio is my dream gig too not to mention I'm also a fan of Gary's. It was quite small of him to act that way but I guess he really wanted the gig, he would have ruled with Dio ... but not more than me if I ever get my turn!

I loved Gary's work with Heavy Bones, but I honestly don't think he would have fit in as well with Dio.
