never really was a huge pantera fan... mostly due to phil.

+1. i had to get used to his voice, and while he'll never be a favorite of mine, i've certainly warmed up a lot to the band. and you guys are right, dime was fuckin amazing.

i grew up with vinnie and dime here in dfw, they were labeled the next "vh" because they had so much sound and energy, plus they were huge fans of van halen it was just oozing through their sound. then they hooked up with phil and changed their sound and image never understood why

Re: 5 minutes alone...

No doubt phil is one of the best metal singers out there, or atleast was, but even back in '96 when I seen them he was fucked up. Noone had more fun that night then dime, it was what he lived for, and phil just complained, fucked up on H. From great frontman to douche is a fine line.
I think dime did alot more with the music then vh. Completely different people of course, and individualisation lead him on his own path, rather then follow someone elses. His own legacy will never be matched, like the other greats, randy, hendrix etc. (yes I rank him that high )
Proof is in the solo's, Floods, Shattered, 10's, The Sleep.

dime is in my top 3 of all time hendrix, rhoads, and dime... you pick the order dime was the real deal
from the get go... chops, technique, and attitude. imo i think phil held them back with his attitude.

agreed!
especially if you consider the two years he left dime and vinnie dormant at the end of pantera....we could have had another damageplan album!

Yeah, there was always something bout Pantera that was hard to put your finger on. Vinnie and Dime were an amazing combination together with both of them having speed, technical ability, and the ability to lay down a groove. A lot of their material is hard to top - Cemetary Gates still sends chills down my spine when I hear it, everytime guaranteed.

No one can argue with that. They really were the "real deal". When they were on fire they were just so special.

And like somebody else, Dime could play with so much feel and heart. Have you heard the solos to "10s" and "Floods"? Jesus christ, those solos are amazing. Especially the outro to "Floods".............. brings a tear to me eyes most times I hear it...........

He could play the crazy fast stuff but he also had the ability to step back and just play with so much feeling.

I 100% recommend "The Great Southern Trendkill" to everyone. It truely is one of the most underrated albums of the past 20 years. I can't believe that not many people have heard it. It's a beast of an album. It ranges from some of their most "intense/hardcore" material to their "softest/laid back" material. Brilliant.

Re: 5 minutes alone...

yep...trendkill is as good as pantera gets in my opinion and i honestly dont run into too many other people that consider that album their favorite. its got a huge 'fuck you' attitude to it after the commercial success FBD had.

Also my favourite. I really dig the groove in the outro for the title track.

yeah i know,

and Docent passed away the same day as Dime's birthday

anyway

shit...

i'm just listening to Hard lines , Sunken Cheeks - both black tooth bootleg version and the FBD one...

damn that song and especially its intro kicks so much ass...

now the solo kicked in ...

Rip Dime... You're the one who made me pick the guitar up again.
