• Did EVH have a Marshall Endorsement?

I was just speaking with one of the teachers here and neither one of us was sure. I don't remember ever seeing him in a Marshall ad. If not, why? Wouldn't it have been easier for him to use Marshall's instead of having Peavey build him a Marshall?

I'm sure you guys will have the answer!

Re: Did EVH have a Marshall Endorsement?

My knowledge of this is nothing more than hearsay that I got from my Marshall rep back in the mid-90's. He said Eddie wanted an amp based on 6L6's because he always used 6CA7's in his old Marshall, which are a direct EL34 replacement but have more in common tonally with a 6L6. There were no new 6CA7's at that time and NOS had become very expensive. Marshall refused to build an amp around the 6L6, so Eddie looked elsewhere and Peavey offered him the best deal. I question this story because not long after, we received a red JCM900 with 6L6 tubes after placing an order for a regular JCM900. I was told it was a mistake and we had received a custom order but we could keep it. Point is, I have difficulty believing they would build a custom order JCM900 with 6L6's but would refuse to accomodate the wishes of EVH for a production amp. Anyone else heard anything similar?

The fact that Peavey could do both an amp and guitar deal, had alot to do with it also.

In the sad state where Ed's head has been..I would be reluctant to want to put his name on anything...is he reliable..useful??

is he going to ever make music again without having a breakdown , a tizzy or some drama...it doesn't look that promising..

Ed was the reason I play...but I gave up on him..since he gave up on him..

maybe one day he can redeem himself..

I have other hungry monster heroes now that has long replaced Ed...Like Jeff Loomis and the like..

        I don't need him anymore..

That would make sense except Eddie went with Music Man for his signature guitar around the same time he went with Peavey for the amp. It was several years later when he jumped to Peavey for his guitar after he claimed the MM guitars were too pricey and production was too slow (and he thinks $2.5K isn't too pricey for a bolt-on Charvel?)

I agree w/ Rupe, Ed went with Peavey for an amp & Music Man for his guitar. I believe it was 3 or 4 years aftr this that he left MM for Peavey for his guitars. My "speculation" on why is likely Peavey offered more money & a better deal for a package deal.

what's weird is that the 5150..has nothing to do with Ed's tone up till that point...

Ed's classic tone and a 5150 is apples and oranges..I said that the day I bought one back in '91..

              I thought..cool amp...but this ain't EVH...???!!!

I think the deal with MM was that the facility was close to Ed's house, so that was the guitar company he went with. Don't know why he ended up with Peavey for the amp....

Nice geetar tho...and I'm glad Ed did go to Peavey..otherwise we wouldn't have the 5150..probably..

This is an interesting question, and I'd love to know the whole story.

I suppose that since the artist doesn't have to become involved in the engineering side (anymore than he wants to, anyway), he probably isn't concerned with the difficulty presented to the manufacturer, and is more concerned with whoever pays top dollar. And, I can see Peavey jumping at the chance to become a serious contender in the world of rock/metal (before EVH, the only thing I remember about Peavey was cheap PA speakers and a big presence in the world of country music, and a bit of southern rock (Lynyrd Skynyrd used 'em, and I think Molly Hatchet did, too)). The mystery is how Marshall let him get away. Really stupid move on its part, IMO.

I always thought that way myself dude..

but since the 5150..Peavey really got their shit together with guitar amps now...

they were the crappy cheapies back in the day...that nobody took that seriously..now they make some serious shit.

Yeah but you can still get close to the same EVH tone, look at him he played them and still sounded like ED. To be fair he would rip the speakers out of the cabs and still used his beloved celestion 75's in all his cabs, but he said it himself, when he wanted an amp he wanted something over the top with gain, i bet marshall just couldnt do it, they still cant, look at the JCM2000 line. Plus you have to remember marshall never really did artist amps till the mid 90's. They probaly regret letting him get away and that is why they gave zakk and slash a artist head each.
