Re: Did EVH have a Marshall Endorsement?

well slash got his because it cost too much for him to get 10 Silver Jubilees made for him, and cheaper for him to have a sig. line to use.

from the words of the man himself.

Re: Did EVH have a Marshall Endorsement?

"Yeah but you can still get close to the same EVH tone, look at him he played them and still sounded like ED. To be fair he would rip the speakers out of the cabs and still used his beloved celestion 75's in all his cabs, but he said it himself, when he wanted an amp he wanted something over the top with gain, i bet marshall just couldnt do it, they still cant, look at the JCM2000 line. Plus you have to remember marshall never really did artist amps till the mid 90's. They probaly regret letting him get away and that is why they gave zakk and slash a artist head each.

Oh hell no..a 5150 and Ed's
classic tone are as different as night and day..apples to oranges...to MY ears!!

His hands may have alot to do with any "tone" that your hearing...

but to my ears ..no way..

Ed could play thru..ANY high gain amp and "sound" like ED..be it a recto , a Crate , a friggin' DSL.. Carvin and so on..he's ED...who else is he going to sound like.

I can almost nail both his sounds with my son's line 6 Spyder..it probably would be NAILED if he played it!

I always could get damn near to cloning his classic tone with my JMP-1..I had a 5150 and my Marshall rack in the same room for years and years..my marshall rack w /5881's always spanked the 5150 for doing old "Van Halen" stuff..not even close...no comparison!!!

You want a "EVH Marshall Sig"..put a JMP-1 in a pretty box with some 6L6s in it..BOOOOM...Ed's new head.

that prolly won't be to far off the mark ..if and when Marshall will do it...

I was just speaking with one of the teachers here and neither one of us was sure. I don't remember ever seeing him in a Marshall ad. If not, why? Wouldn't it have been easier for him to use Marshall's instead of having Peavey build him a Marshall?

I'm sure you guys will have the answer!

[/ QUOTE ]

AFAIK, no. I think it was because the Marshalls Ed were using were out of production amps and Marshall was trying to promote a new amp line called the JCM's. If Ed had used a stock JCM, I bet there likely would have been an endorsement. I would lay odds that it was at least discussed but I think since Marshalls were so widely used by everybody it really did not seem to hit them how much one guy would matter. Funny, IBM likely thought the same of future market Bully Gates.

70's-80's stock of 6Ca7's were still very available in the mid 80's. I recently came across a loose RCA 6Ca7 tube and a receipt from when I had a retube done on my MusicMan.
The shop cost if I recall was like 30.00 for a pair-(maybe it was each-have to find it again.) 70's stock Tung sol 6550's, those were kinda expensive back then in like early 80's I seem to recall, but now they're rediculous.

when the JMP-1 came out in 96..it was uncanny how Van Halenish you can dial this fucker in to that ...well that's what I always gunned for ..for his tone..John and I both were both still on a mission ...a quest for his tone..it was by far the closest thing we've discovered at that time..10 years ago..

put a JMP-1..in a Box ..mod it or whatever..throw in some 5881's ..and hey ..a built-in fully tweakable phaser..and some echo...bada boom bada bing...I give you...The Van Halen!!

Remember, though, that by the time he signed up with Peavey, his tone had much more to do with amps that said Soldano on them than Marshall...

yes..1990 the F.U.C.K period ..Top of the world ..Korina flying V and a SLO ..

the Peavey..that amp was like a mix of both..but definitely not either really..Marshalls sound like Marshalls..Soldanos sound like Soldanos..and 5150..well..you get the pic..

they are all different creatures..totaly..with their own voice..

Re: Did EVH have a Marshall Endorsement?

I think as soon as Ed ditched the Marshalls and the old guitars his tone went into the crapper. Personally I don't like the way the 5150 sounds when Ed is playing it. I have never played one myself so I can't comment on how it would sound with me playing it. I don't see why Ed wanted such a high gain amp when his best tones were not over the top with gain, but smooth and delicious with power amp saturation.

In my opinion the greatest distorted guitar tone ever recorded was VHII.

Re: Did EVH have a Marshall Endorsement?

Even though he wasn't using production model Marshall's, I'd say someone made a major mistake by not getting Ed on board as a Marshall endorser. As far as I know he didn't "actually" play Kramer guitars, but the people at Kramer didn't seem to care. They new that having Ed as the poster boy for Kramer would sell guitars, and it did.

Ed used Marshall amps for years before he hooked up with Soldano or Peavey. So I wonder why there was never a deal made between him and Marshall. Maybe it's because Marshall just didn't do endorsements of any kind at the time? Or maybe Ed and Marshall had a falling out?

One of my all time favorite tones, along with Warren's tone on "Lay it Down" and George's tone on the "Under Lock and Key" album.
You'll never get that VHII tone playing a 5150!

Van Halen one coolest tone ever..and Steve Stevens..on Vince Neil's exposed..awesome tone!!!

if it wern't for Van Halen and that tone in 1978..Ratt and Lynch and most probably wouldn't be around..

I think VHII is a bit smoother, VHI has a bit too much buzz sometimes.

To me VH 1st ..was the tone never heard before ..it smacked guitarist right in the face..There was nothing like his tone in the age of disco..that erupted (pun intended) it was a breakthrough sound , fire and style unlike ever heard before up until that very moment..

That started it all..I know it did for me..

I was 13 in 1978 and that is what made me..well ..type here as we speak..

But yes , VH II tone and on WACF and Fair Warning and DD is amazing..1984..he started to sound fuzzy and thin..listen to the intro to "pananma"..great song and riff..but his tone there is pretty fuzzy..compared to "Unchained"..

The intro to Ain't talkin' bout love was the epitome of awesome tone ..whe I first heard that I played that intro over and over again..all day..I never heard nothing like that before in my life..it souded so big and evil..

That's one of my amp test and tweak riffs..if I can get any amp to cooperate when playing that riff..then me and that amp is getting along..

I played that thru a dsl..oh hell no..if I can't nail that tone and sound with a Marshall..that's a damn shame..

Yeah, me and an amp have to be able to produce "I'm On Fire", "Unchained", "Feel Your Love Tonight" and "Mean Street" to get along as well.

I forgot how to play "Ain't Talking 'Bout Love"...although it was one of the first things I learned on guitar.

Most Marshalls don't really nail the old VH tone because Eddie used big bottle 6CA7 tubes that had more in common tonally with a 6L6. Closest I've ever come to that sound was with a Fender ToneMaster...a 6L6 amp...at a volume that God could hear. Not a super high gain amp, but neither was Eddie's tone back then.
Also, Eddie paved the way for all of the eighties metal guys, but some of them still had some kick ass tones.
