Icon opened for them once in 84' in cleveland..

remember Icon..

I remember one Icon video in the mid 80's. Think there were 2 axeslingers - one played a Jackson Randy Rhodes custom. They were from AZ. but had a quick crash & burn due to the music industry starting to change. Teased hair ala Nikki Sixx (probably wigs), lots of tude', and pointy shredding Jacksons thru Marshall stacks. What's there not to like?

Always thought Ratt was superior to Crue guitar wise. If only Nikki and Vince had Warren, Robbin, and Blotz! THAT is an interesting musical combo.

Icon was coo..their 1st s/t was their best..

BTW..Jake E lee was in Rought Cutt and Ratt for a short stint..and Juan Croucier was from Dokken..

The best thing Vince Neil ever did was with Steve Stevens ..IMO!!!

There haven't been many good Behind The Music's in a while (TLC? c'mon, who cares!). RATT will be a good one.

+1 about Vince Neil too!

I always thought Steve's playing on that album sounded like a George Lynch imitation, but I haven't listened to it in over 10 years. I'll dust that one off when I go home tonight...I didn't care for it when it came out but I was becoming disenchanted with metal then and entered my Hendrix phase
Steve's playing on Atomic Playboys kicked ass IMO.

I think Stevens sounded exactly like Stevens (ray guns & all) and at the time blew away Lynch..on that album!~!

I find a copy of that in the dollar bins all the time..what a shame..that is one of the best "guiatar" albums made..but in 92 the mainstream was changing for the worse and shred was now officialy.."gay"..

I had friends around here that used to smoke my ass sweeping arpeggios galore..but were embarassed to play that stuff (its gay) because NOW they are in a "grunge" band..true story!

so while they were all grunging..I was shredding ..

I'll listen to the album again tonight, but my impression back in '92 was that it was a Lynch ripoff and sounded like nothing Stevens had done up to that time (including the Jerusalem Slim album he did with Michael Monroe around that same time). I'll post again after I listen with my more mature ears

Under the gun...was my fave Icon tune.

Rupe..Monroe and Stevens got into it over that album..he didn't want Steve to "shred"..he was like hey man play like Johnny Thunders...

Steve said why in the fuck did you call me then..call Johnny Thunders..true story..in a old GW interview at the time.

So Steve bowed down and dummied down for that fag.

I remeber that interview. Steve didn't dummy it down too much though, and Micheal hated the album after it was released in Japan because of it. I was backstage at one of his shows in NYC in '93 and some chick asked him to sign her copy. He writes "This album sucks!!! M Monroe" I thought it was pretty cool though, although I haven't listened to it in almost as long as the Vince Neil album. Now I have two to blow the cobwebs off of tonight.

Alright, I stand corrected (that's what 10 plus years of not hearing something along with all the grey matter I've destroyed over that time will do), it was the Jerusalem Slim album where he sounded like a Lynch ripoff, not the Exposed album. Pretty cool playing on there...definitely Stevens being Stevens; more along the lines of the Atomic Playboys stuff but even wilder.

Sully, you should get in touch with VH1's producers to act as a consultant of sorts, to get the details straight re Robbin's last days.

[/ QUOTE ]

very nice of you to say that, but i would never be of a mind to say that i could be an authority on the subject. my friendship with robbin was the equivalent to a few grains of sand in the desert that was his life. the stories that i could offer, while certainly funny at times, were mainly sad ones and i'd rather have him remembered for the what he did on stage and record than as a guy who lost a battle with his demons. there's enough tragic tales of those who lost those kind of fights.

i know that they did some interviews with robbin for some 80s stuff, and i seem to remember that it was originally intended to be a BTM episode, but i'm not 100% certain.

i can say that if they have that POS blotzer as the main interviewee, you're gonna be disappointed and you won't get the truth. ratt was lead by robbin and stephen. bobby didn't write any of the songs, and he was just a neanderthal like drummer. anyway, if their wallets are listening louder than their egos are talking, who knows, there could be some kind of reunion. but from what i've been told by juan, it would take a LOT for that to happen. they tried it 9 years ago, and they really did a number on robbin when they did it. they never had any intention of having him rejoin the band, they just wanted to try to get him on board or give them his blessing so that he wouldn't sue them over the use of the band name. he didn't have the rights to it, they all kinda did, but if they had 4 guys in the band against robbin, he wouldn't have had much of a case. that's part of why juan didn't reunite with them, as well.

quite honestly, i don't think that ratt still has the ability to do something like what motley crue did recently with their tour. there's reasons why they have to do small club or summer package tours. they can't sell out 10-20,000 seat arenas anymore. blotzer and dimartini have run that band's legacy so far into the ground it's pathetic. don't get me wrong, i like the guys who are filling in, but it's not ratt, and it hasn't been ratt for decades. ever wonder why they haven't recorded with that lineup? it's because the main ratt song writers (stephen, robbin, and to a lesser extent, warren) aren't around anymore and they know better to waste the money on a record that won't sell.

anyway, i'm kinda looking forward to seeing this as an episode, but i have the feeling that i'd wind up being pissed off after it was over with. they're not going to paint the story accurately; a band who was once like a tight knit gang that later completely imploded upon itself and have been riding coattails of a career that have long since become threadbare. yeah, it's a billion times more than anything any of us have accomplished in that industry, and they'd lived the lives of 10 men, but it's just sad, and i'm sure that blotzer has been begging vh1 for a BTM for years...kinda like how kiss begged mtv for the unplugged in 1995, only to be told that the only way that they'd go for it is if kiss completely reunited.

i was a huge ratt fan when i was a kid, and i enjoyed every album (or parts of them) they put out. like many of you, i had great memories of learning their songs as i was a kid, and hanging their posters on the wall and dreaming of having cool guitars like that. but they're not those guys anymore, and they're not that band anymore, and they never can be again. besides, most BTM episodes end on a positive note; unless they reunite (which i really don't think they should), they don't have a positive ending. besides, have they done any BTM episodes over the past couple of years? it's too bad, because those shows were great, even if they were about bands i had no interest in. you'd always wind up hooked.

anyway, i'm off my soapbox.

Ratt can never truly be Ratt again without Robbin, RIP.

Since that's not possible, I wish DeMartini would work with new talent, drop working the Ratt "name", and evolve to the next chapter. Warren was / is technically the most talented and needs to reinvent himself at this stage.
