Fragal: I will back you up on the Dream Theater comparison. Musically the clean break around the 2 minute mark in "Baying of the Hounds" sound very DT musically. Not so much vocally IMO though. Not a rip off just DTish. I love it.

Since Scott won't toot his own horn and some of you may not know...Scholomance is another band who has remarkable diversity.

      Great thread BTW.

I listened to Rapture last night with the wife when we both went to bed trippin' on xanax..

It's great I must get their older stuff now as well.

        [/ QUOTE ]

I agree with your thoughts on Anathema. The other Rapture releases are "Songs For the Withering", probably the closest-sounding release to "Silent Stage". Their debut is "Futile", it's a lot darker (no clean vocals on this one!). Love 'em all.

One last band to recommend to all, is Forest Stream. They're a band from Russia who are basically two guys who recorded the debut (Tears of A Mortal Solitude) from their bedroom. Don't be put off by that, it sounds amazing. Some great contrasts ala Opeth with Opeth-length songs. I wish more people knew about them. Here's their website: http://www.foreststream.net/

Well comparison to DT aside, I personally believe it's a 70's prog influence: Pink Floyd.

            eh....

I hear Camel Uriah Heep and Caravan alot more than I'm hearing Pink Floyd.

Camel is the best 70's prog I've ever heard. Mirage is brilliant!

Embraced rule too! I have both their's too, and they should have something out this year hopefully. I think the keyboardist was touring with soilwork at one stage, but then their website said they were reunited and writing, heres hoping

                    OK just a very stupid and silly thought...I'm high..very high...so I must share this..even if I didn't want to.

If I got the name "Bill Z Bub"..tattooed on my fully engorged schlong...it would probably read "Bibz" when it wasn't so "happy"..don't ask how the B could get in front of the Z...that stuff just happens

                    your thoughts...talk amoungst yourselves.

Godgory fucking rule! Last year I found resurrection in the bargain bin at a metalstore on the way to a festival and almost got a semi...that thing ate up alot of k's(miles) on the roadtrip! I'm pretty set on way beyond being my fave of theirs though, I cant get enough of them.

I'll have to check out your thread, I've always been intimidated by the size of it (you've never heard that before huh)

Yeah, I have Embraced 'Within'. I dig it - one of the more underappreciated melodic black/death discs from Sweden. I think I have a dub of the other one too. I love the early Anathema stuff too, but once they got rid of the growls and ultra-heavy depressive riffs they ceased to be very stimulating for me. I'm listening to the new Between The Buried and Me today. It's a big improvement over the last couple cds. They're throwing in some Dream Theater/prog parts now.
As for Scholomance, well, people who are into heavy technical death prog (pianos, keyboards, solos, conceptual lyrics, black classical, etc.) can check it out. Love it or hate it kind of stuff for most people. We broke up some time back and I'm working on new material with Jackson Warriors and a couple BC Rich 10 strings in hand! Thanks for the mention guys.
