Re: Ghost Reveries - Opeth

If you like hearing Akerfeldt's vocals in a different setting, check out Ayreon's "The Human Equation" (yes he does both growls and natural vox). One of the best releases last year IMHO. And of course there's always Bloodbath

well, today i bought GR. i've only scanned through a couple of songs now, so i can't say if i like it or not....it's certainly not bad, it think it appears to be quite good actually. but then again, i think i'll have to listen to it at least a couple of times to understand whats going on....great.

however, for some strange reasons i think that some of the songs sound VERY dream theater - ish....kinda what i wished the new DT record to sound like. of course james labrie will never do growl vocals, but aside of that the whole songwriting and clean singing style is very DT....esp the second song.

Wow...ok. there's on edifference between DT and Opeth. James Labrie sounds like a fag.

IF you're looking for awesome musicianship, ambience adn mood setting..

CHECK OUT THE NEW ARCTURUS ALBUM "SIDESHOW SYMPHONIES"

it is amazing. Simen Vortex (bassist and clean vocalist for Dimmu Borgir) is the vocalist. He has an awesome powerful and melodic voice. And the entire band are a bunch of virtuosos. It's an amazing listen. Takes a while to sink it, as they can be a bit strange. http://www.arcturus.no

Labrie's voice is becoming much better again and on albums (producing magic aside) his voice is amazing.

Ayreon ROCKS, got every last one of their released, prog gods, imho.

"James Labrie sounds like a fag"..I agree

he's improved..but "amazing" would't my choice of words ..decent is more like it.

Jorne Lande , Dan Swano , Russell Allen , Mats Levin , Akerfeldt , Halford , Dio and etc....That is "amazing" ..IMO.

Yeah I agree on the vocalists, hard to top Dio!

I can't wait to go check them out, they'll be here october 27th. Can't wait to add another obscure metal T-shirt to the collection as well!

Update: just listened to some Arcturus, it has that ridiculous black metal screeching/attempt-at-growling stuff in it, that's definitly a turn-off, but I'll give em a chance.

Vortex in Arcturus, I'm in!

I agree that opeth needs the growling, its what creates the dynamics to the band. They needed this return to heaviness to get there full sound imo. Big fast double kicks, heavy palm mutes, and bloodbath vocals. You have to have that. Then when they turn over and have the lyrical wailings and sensitive solitude it makes a much bigger impact. Without good there is no bad and vice versa and such.

The new album doesn't have any of that...you listened to some OLD shit. There is probably 1 minute TOTAL black metal rasp on the ENTIRE album.

Peter Tangren is killer on the new Bloodbath "Nightmares made flesh"..Eaten is my favorite song on it..it's actually my favorite Bloodbath CD..

I was bummed that Mike left, but Pete does an excellent Job..

Speaking Of which The new Hypocrisy "virus" TRULY RULES!!!

They play swedish death thrash the way it should be ...no Korn like sample BS on this..I wish soilwork / In Flames take note..

I want my old Soilwork back...for they have forsaken me!

Re: Ghost Reveries - Opeth

What blew me away the most about the new Opeth was that I was hearing people say it was very mellow and took too much from Porcupine Tree (possibly because of the keyboards?). No freakin' way is it mellow. I think its one of their heaviest discs and the solo sections are killer. Morningrise is still my favorite, followed by My Arms... but this new one is really good.
Horns, you mentioned November's Doom. I'd say they are a cross between Opeth, My Dying Bride & Edge of Sanity/Dan Swano. The vox remind me a LOT of Dan. Not bad. New Bloodbath is very entertaining. I liked how the first full length was after the old Swedish sound and this one has more of the old Florida sound.
Must go check out new Arcturus stuff now! Love those guys!

Dude..you are a welcome sight around here..

Scott I can see your blatant metal savy..I like that!!!

By the way I agree about ND being a mix of MDB and Opeth..

I see a lot of similarities betwen Mike Akerfeldt and Dan Swano..both in style ..clean and dirty vocals..I really like Dan's clean vox alot..I picked up a three song prog metal EP called Oddessy..and he smokes on it..I wished they would put out a full length..but that's been some time ago and probably a one time deal..he was with some members of Memory Garden..who I like alot.

We WILL be discussing much more metal I guarantee you..

Cheers Brother..and welcome aboard...Now YOU are a TRUE Metalhead..and of course we are of like minds in our music..NICE!
