Re: Ghost Reveries - Opeth

they are doing a headlining north american tour for you guys in october and november, with support acts Pelican, Fireball Ministry, Nevermore and Into Eternity.

Blabbermouth story here

Ghost Reveries is a great "return to form" and possibly their greatest album yet, personally I haven't really dug anything they did after Still Life until this one.

Sanctuary..I picked up the new Rapture "silent stage"..Is good..reminds me of slower , doomier Sentenced..

and speaking of which anyone pick up their new "funeral" album...I was a "little" dissappointed in it..maybe I should listen to it again.

It's sure a welcomed feeling to be talking 'bout "real" metal again with folks..

I picked up GR because they are headlining the nevermore show in October, best as I can tell, and I wanted to be familiar with them. I gotta say I am blown away. I HATE the growling in music today and for the first time it acutally fits. I really like the growling on this album..it really adds emotion which I guess is the point.
This disc has impressed me almost as much as Godless.
I haven't had a pre 2005 disc in my walkman for a month...that's a big change.

GR is pretty damn amazing. Like Pink Floyd gone horribly evil--you gotta love that!

Ahh yes, Sentenced used to be great. Rapture most compares to older Katatonia IMHO. Give "Silent Stage" a few listens. It does take a while to sink in. Oh yes, my highest recommendation on Disillusions "Back to times of Splendor". I sincerely believe that this is one of the only bands that can match up to Opeth in terms of aggression, melody and complexity (a tall order, I know).

Re: Ghost Reveries - Opeth

Agreed on Disillusion. Those guys RULE. Vurtox has one of the coolest voices since...well, maybe since Mike of Opeth. His power and versatility are impressive and its just plain cool how he rolls his tongue off some of the words (ya gotta hear it if you don't know what I'm talking about). And if you want EPIC, Disillusion is it. Complete strength, conviction and the production quality and guitar sound are so massive I can't believe it.
New Sentenced seems more of the same like the last couple albums. For me, North From Here and Amok will always be the coolest from them.
And Bill, I have Oddysey too. I really dig it and I wish Dan had done a full length of that stuff instead of some of the more recent Nightingale material. I kinda ran screaming from the newest disc. Got any Unicorn?

Hey hey...nice to meet a fellow Disillusion fan! I love how Vurtox rolls his words too. Have you heard their older stuff? Check out "Three Neon Kings" and "The Porter". They're EPs/demos and are available off Disillusions website. Not as good production (what can you expect), but everything is there and it's even heavier that their debut. My band Uncreation is confirmed to be local support for Disillusion on December 16th when they play here in Hamburg.
As you can imagine we are happy as fuck! This band rules.

after listening to it some more, i think the first, second, fifth, and seventh songs are my faves. yes, i like the grand conjuration...a lot actually. it's indeed a bit repetitive, but still ass-kicking
the break in the middle of the 2nd song is one of the best breaks i've ever heared, it's amazing. but still, esp. this break reminds me a LOT of dream theater....kinda caught in a web - ish.

Mike and Dan have had a lot of history together, I remember seeing on dans site a scrapbook he had at his first studio that he made each band draw in that had mike in it.
And the state of metal really is very good! Alot of new release absolutely kill, I've bought more albums in the past 3 months then most of last year!

Disillusion I don't have ..yet?

I have Loudness's Disillusion..

I will pick up their stuff on my next order..thank you.

I listened to Rapture last night with the wife when we both went to bed trippin' on xanax..

It's great I must get their older stuff now as well.

Scott what about Embraced , I like them very much I have both Within and Amourous Anathema..speaking of Anathema I used to love this band ..I have all their older material...but this last one they did sucks..way too light for me..and when I say "light" that means both opposite of heavy and dark..Yuk!

OK gotta run..

Lator!

Re: Ghost Reveries - Opeth

I just came back from seeing Opeth live here in Hamburg... what a great gig! It's been 2 1/2 years since I saw them last time.
Their support band, Extol, only played four songs, which was fine with me because I didn't really care for them.
Then Opeth came on stage and stayed there for almost two hours.
For me it was definitely the best gig I've seen this year (also the most anticipated), setlist was:

baying of the hounds
when
deliverance
in my time need
to rid the disease
the drapery falls
the grand conjuration
face of melinda (I can die happy now!)
blackwater park
demon of the fall

They have definitely improved alot since I last saw them, especially Mikael's voice.
Although he announced that they all got the flu (they always get ill when they play in Hamburg, weird coincidence), they were tight and had much fun on stage. Mike's comments during the songs were hilarious, he's full of self-confidence nowadays and he shows it.
The sound was great, very clear and balanced.
So an all around great gig with wonderful atmosphere.

The best thing is that Mikael said they will come back in November or December, so I'm probably gonna see them twice this year.
