Re: Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine

yeah, thanks for reminding me. NOTHING comes close to the new nevermore record...except for earlier nevermore records
seriously, this godless endeavor is one of the best records i've ever heared, it's got it all, skill, technical stuff, and catchy songwriting.
having that said, opeth comes close. i'm really digging the new opeth...it's my first opeth record, and it won't be my last that's for sure. it took me a while to get into it, but now it's only topped by nevermore.

as i said....the new arch enemy sucks IMHO, the new dream theater sucks BIG TIME (WORST DT record EVER.....disgusting!), the new exodus isn't out yet here in europe....september 30th is the release date iirc.
by the way....excuse my brain fart, but was enemy of god released in 2005 or 2004? because it's great, too

I actually like the fact that AE's songwriting has gotten a bit more 'streamlined' on the last few albums. I like the work with Johan, but I think their songwriting might be better on the new album and Wages than it was before. Just a personal preference. I will say that Anthems of Rebellion kinda blows, though.

I really like Wages of Sin and was defending all the naysayers against Angela...

Well, tides have turned. Angela brought more prosperity for the band, which is good, but the music has gone on the downward spiral.

Anthems was bad enough that I didn't buy it. I haven't really heard a track on Doomsday that I like.

At this point, I really want Carcass back.

Re: Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine

I've said this so many times that I probably sound like a broken record (no pun intended), but with every AE album, Michael's songwriting becomes more and more formulaic. Either it's more a "brutal" verse followed by some cheese-ass chorus, or a mid-paced song with a shred-by-the-numbers solo. It's not really bad, but it's predictable! It's similar to the way that In Flames and Soilwork have the standard clean, sing-along chorus in EVERY song - you KNOW what's coming.

The sad thing is that I don't think AE "sold out" or made a drastic change...and maybe that's the problem. With Soilwork, it was obvious that the technicality was gone. With In Flames, the guitars no longer carry the melody, like they used to. But with AE, it's like they have a box of riffs and solos stocked up for every album, and just throw together whatever is available. The solos no longer add to the songs. The drumming is good, but also predictable.

I know that metal fans are fickle, crying "sell out!" when a band changes styles even the slightest, yet complaining if the same band records the same album five times in a row. In the case of Arch Enemy, they made a significant change (vocals) that ultimately didn't have much bearing on the musical direction. The music remains good, but these are essentially songs that we've heard from dozens of bands hundreds of times, with a blonde girl growling over them. The guitar work has lost its spark, and the lyrics are as bad as anything from a nu-metal band.

To me the new AE record kinda sounds more like a jam session that they improved on afterwards. The older stuff kinda sounds like they worked around riffs and made the songs, but this one sounds like they approached it differently. There's nothing wrong with workin either way, it's just gonna sound different. I still like the new album, but not as much as say the new Nevermore. Goddamn I listen to that album everyday, while I only listened to the new Arch Enemy every now n then. Either way, the new album is good

I agree. It sucks that we will never hear amazing albums like Stigmata or Black Earth again. Yes I know you all love Angela because she is eye candy. Go to a fuckin' strip club. She sucks live. They have lost the aggression that was alive in the band early on and one has to wonder what Chris is doing, leaving them during a tour. Well anyway, just MHO. And yes, I have every damn ARCH ENEMY album since day one. I just wish they'd break up and Carcass would re-form.

well even tho this stuff is not some of these guys best material..and it's NOT!

doesn't it feel so goddamn good to have TRUE "metal" thriving again after more than a decade of total obscurity..

yeah I know it never went away..just underground..but this is so refreshing to me ..that's for sure..

I'm happy..I haven't been happier in well a freakin' decade..

because just a few years ago someof you guys wouldn't even know what the hell we are talking about..this is true..

I was here a few years ago..I remember..

Now we all know about this stuff...I love it!!

Metal is just too damn good to be denied..it couldn't stay underground for much longer..it was just a matter of time..before something had to give..

Kids needed to Rock again..they had know fuckin' clue what metal or even rock / guitar is all about man..R&B turned kids into little pussified dweeb humpers..singing love songs to each other and shit..

Man if we were at the bustop and some fucktard strating singing love songs while standing next to me back in my day..you got your ass wooped...usually by me..

Actually, she looks kinda skanky onstage, in person.

The two times I've seen her she was great. Great presence, good audience control and she could be heard.

Carcass..what the hell was that transition in direction from their Swansong to the revamped Blackstar..yeah I'm all for a Carcass reunion but that ain't gonna happen ..not with the popularity of Arch Enemy (yes they are true metal )..with a somewhat lame new album..had to put it on again last night..and I did not pop wood...the first song is cool and then it just rolls down hill from there

I have so much crap (7000 metal cds) this shit starts to bleed togther at times.

well to get back to carcass..Mike Amott is doing spiritual Beggars and AE ..Bill Steer is fucking around with Firebird and seems content in doing classic blues rock..unless they get Chris and Mike or Bill to do an album ..i don't see it in the cards..I wish I were wrong..and if they do please let it be classic carcass ..at least Heartwork would be nice.

But To be honest I'd much rather see a Coroner reunion ..Tommy Veterli AKA ..TT Baron is one of my favorite guitarist of all time..and they are one of my favrote bands of all time!!!

He didn't get to shine at all with his stint with Kreator!!

OK gotta bail

I love Angela's voice on Wages and I thought she did well on the U.S. tour for Anthems (the only time I've seen AE live). I will agree that her voice appears to be going downhill--I don't think the female body was made to emit sounds like that!

Personally, I thought Johan had a HORRIBLE voice. I can hardly listen to the AE albums he's on, even though the music on them is fantastic. He sounds like a drunken biker dude complaining about his bar tab. Didn't fit the music at all.
