• Lynch Mob - REvolution

So as not to detract any more from the Ratt thread here's a new thread open for discussion. Some didn't like Lynch Mob's REvolution, I did. Here's my reply to Bill's last comment on the subject.

[ QUOTE ]
HE "ruined" the songs..the hell with the "vocals"

Leonardo DaVinci ..didn't go.."hey waite..I forgot to draw eyebrows on the Mona Lisa".

I just hope EVH never finds the need to "update" all his classic peices of art he created when he had brain cells.

Leave those memories of mine intact please.

Now I'm not referring to George's playing abilties..but don't back pedal and try re-do a CLASSIC ..

That's like pimpin' out a 1965 Shelby Cobra..

[/ QUOTE ]

FYI - DaVinci painted over several of his drawings and paintings to improve them. He's actually even re-painted one with slightly different elements. (at the church's request) George Lucas has said that a movie is never finished, it's just abandoned. However, this isn't about paintings or movies. I am sure music and songs are the same way for some artists.

So again, you're entitled to your opinion.

I felt that George did a very good job at revitalizing older material, or at the very least bridge the gap between old and new. George has taken quite a few chances musically as of late. Some worked and some didn't. (Smoke This) Not everyone is going to like what he did with REvolution, but at least he isn't phoning it in.

I, for one, applaud him for continuing to stay relevant in this day and age of "dumbed down" guitar playing.

In regards to re-doing "classics" I've gotta say, I've heard some excellent re-makes of classic songs that I have absolutely no objection to and dare I say I actually like better than the original. George has actually played on a couple of them. (Marc Bonilla's cover of "I Am The Walrus" is pure genius.) Even Whitesnake has re-done a few of their classics for the better. "Here I Go Again" and "Fool For Your Lovin'" were on Whitesnake albums of the late 70s and early 80s. It worked for Coverdale, why can't George try it?

Overall it isn't like he demanded everyone's copies of Dokken and Lynch Mob albums. You like those versions, you can still listen to them. I like both.

+1 Tekky.

I have all but worn out that album. I especially feel like the remake of "Tangled in the Web" is much better than the original version.

I love both versions, but it's great to see how George could have done it differently. It's like hearing the swing version of Dream Theater tunes.

Funny thing is, I didn't see REvolution being "nu-metal" and trying to pull fans from that audience. Heavier...yes, modern...yes, nu-metal...I don't see it.

I'd say he took a bit of the "polish" off of the songs to fit closer to that genre, also the overall heaviness is in line with a lot of today's "metal" music. While it's not as "nu-metal" as Smoke This was, it was definitely a better offering. (he even threw a song from "Smoke This" on there)

I just think he should have redone them ..more "true to form"..that's all..with modern tone , vox , production and whatever..not change the whole vibe of the song itself..it's a whole different tune now..

I have Revolution..I put it on once..and i was disappointed , and never put it on again. I remember his playing was great on it and his tone was great..I just didn't like the way he changed the songs..

OK, if he changed the songs for the BETTER ..cool..if he kicked it in the ass..Like any metal band doing an old song and kicking it in the ass..but I didn't find this to be the case here. He didn't do those songs justice or improve them. They're his songs ,he can play them all regae style if he wanted..some would like that..I wouldn't.

I'll put it on again..I only heard it ONCE..I have alot of things to listen to over here Todd..too much. I'm addicted to this crap. I'll try it again..it didn't make a good first impression on me I know that much.

But if it was in my car long enough or something it may grow roots and grow on me ..

Sometimes I put stuff on and hate it..maybe my "mood" wasn't for it..I'll hear it again way later and like it..

All I know is that I was a HUGE Dokken/LYnch fan , and loved those old songs (more than Ratt) ..I just met my wife when that stuff came out..certain "joys" of my life I like to keep intact..and that album didn't bring me joy..it peed on it..

That's just me..on that album..maybe I'm sentimental..I dunno.

You love Savatge..those AWSOME Criss classics..you hold that close to your heart...you don't want to mess with that..NO?

I like that album but the overall sound is too damn muddy.

As I said before, there was no mass re-call on the older Lynch Mob and Dokken material, so you can still enjoy it. With this album, I think Lynch's aim was to bring his music to a wider audience.

In regards to Criss re-recording some of his material? Well, actually, I like the Live In Japan '94 version of Sirens better than the album version. Sadly it was Scholnick who played on it and not Criss. However if Criss were alive today and decided to re-record some songs from a different point of view, I would love it.

I don't like guitarists just for songs and solos. I like them for their technique and their passion. Criss had a lot of passion, I can see him re-visiting Jesus Saves or Sirens just to give it a shot in the arm. Is there anything wrong with the originals? No, definitely not. But people evolve, players evolve, why can't songs evolve with them?

I'd expect that answer from my nephews Bill.

Honestly, I think it would be great if more artists did something like this. We saw how it worked with Whitesnake, (pretty damn well) and Lynch got mixed response out of it. But isn't all music pretty much hit or miss anyway?

REvolution is fun to listen to. I like the way George turned some of those songs upside down and re-worked them. Kiss Of Death kind of bugged me though, only because the original version was all but perfect.(Don's voice being the "all but" part).

Give it another spin, Billy. You will feel the love, i'd bet my nut on it.

Re: Lynch Mob - REvolution

I agree 100%- i love REvolution and Furious George is absolutely brilliant. His take on All Along The Watchtower and I Want You (she's so heavy) are staggering. When someone does a remake of a tune whether it's theirs or not, people will initially cringe. I don't know how many times i have seen a show and the guitarist changed the solo or extended it. The first reaction is WTF? But then if you think about it, they are just making it more interesting. How boring is it to play the EXACT same # of measures or the same notes every damn night.
When i heard SRVs version of All Along, i was just blown away. After Hendrix i thought there was no way to make it "better" and i use that term loosely. But Stevies version just kills. Not better really just different.
Now George has done the same thing. Listen to The I Want You solo too. When that solo kicks in.... Fuuuuuuuck George is MY Crosby or Rhoads or whoever you want to insert.... He continues to be relevant 20 years later just like Robbin or Randy or Jimi or SRV would have been if they were with us.
