• Ozzy Speak of the Devil DVD

After wanting this for many years, I was finally able to get a copy of it... Helps if you look on Amazon LOL. Anyway, this is an Ozzy show during the Diary tour just months after Randy was killed, so it is a Blizzard/Diary set list featuring Brad Gillis on guitar.

I mainly picked it up because I wanted to see a "pro shot" video of the Diary stage, and hear what I consider Ozzy's greatest band (minus Randy of course) doing their thing. Aside from the obvious vocal overdubs (I'm curious if Ozzy faked the whole vocal performance or it was added afterwards), it is a very good show. Brad does an excellent job covering the material. He stays true to Randys solos in structure for the most part, but does his own thing too, making it interesting. He also plays with alot of fire. I guess when you think about it, the bar antics and tapping he was doing was pretty cutting edge for 1982. Of course, his tone rips, one of the best live rock guitar tones IMHO.

Though I can't help but wish it was Randy playing, it is a very cool DVD and worth picking up if you are an early Ozzy fan... and child safe too. Since they cut out all the between song banter, there is only one F-Bomb LOL.

Its clean because it was a Mtv concert orignaly.Love that show and Gillis rules on the sabbath tracks.Ive had arguments over ozzys vocals.I said they were overdubbed and i see yu do to.Dudes vocals live are horrendous at best.Always sounds like hes going through puberty.
Great show, great band.

I saw that tour back in the 'day. Gillis was very good. Nothing against him, but I wish it had been Randy. Never got to see him.

The sad thing is that they recorded the Diary Tour on video two or three times with Randy, but never let that footage out for some reason.

Brad Gillis did a better job playing Randy's stuff than any of Ozzy's guitarists since.

The SOTD cd is amazing, and the video is too. I recorded it off MTV when it originally aired. Great stuff. VERY inspiring.

I never heard that one before... Care to let us in on where you got that information? I hope it is true. If it is, it's a shame that we haven't or will never see it. Lately the Osbourne camp has done nothing but tarnish Randy's legacy with the reissued albums, etc. They owe it to Randy fans to release such a video if it exists.

If the reason is because Ozzy's vocals suck (which is probably the reason), Ozzy/Sharon need to get over it. No one really cares about his "singing" anyway LOL.

Of course I will not down play the fact that he is a legend, and had his hand in some great songs over the past 40 years, and introduced some incredible guitar players to the world.

Oh yeah... The SOTD CD of Sabbath songs rules too. I actually prefer them to the originals.

I think Brad is great. Too bad Ozzy never really considered him an "official" guitar player in his band...

He did. He even wanted him to stay on, but Brad chose to stick with Night Ranger as they were getting more popular at the time. And Speak of the Devil is the best live album ever!!

I thought I read in an old GFPM that when going over Ozzy's past guitarists, when Brad's name came up, he basically said he was never part of his band but did a couple shows.

Regardless, Brad's awesome!

I thought that the DVD was awesome, but the mix was keyboard heavy IMO.

Also, I was confused that SOTD CD I grew up on was sabbath tunes, but the DVD was Album Material. Weird, but cool. I'd like the video of the sabbath material too! This says alot about gillis' diversity as a guitarist. fo sho

I think Sharon is hoarding the Randy footage so when Ozzy dies, she can release it and keep all the $$$ for herself.-Lou

Re: Ozzy Speak of the Devil DVD

I have a problem giving Sharon any of my moolah. Brad did a great job on that tour. I saw Ozzy w/ Jake before anyone knew Jake's name. Ozzy should have hired both Jake & Brad after Randy passed, but Sharon was probably too cheap to put 2 guitarists on the Ozzy payroll. Two great guitarists in his band back then would have been interesting.

It was rumored to have been recorded several times and not released because of Ozzy either fucking up too much or being too fucked up. Old school rumors that the show was filmed in at least San Francisco, which I decided to go to Judas Priest instead, from before the SOTD video was originally shot or aired... People were coming back from the concert, "dude, I'm going to be on video..." means they probably had a camera crew.

Look how long it took for this Speak of the Devil DVD to come out... how long has this footage been around? I've had it on VHS since I recorded it in what... 1982 or something... And it's only come out recently?

Ozzy and Sharon own the video, and I can imagine one day that they'll come out with it for a LOT of $$$.

It is true. I have a few songs on VHS but the quality is worse than terrible...to many generations old. Randy wears a red t-shirt and plays his original white Jackson. Story was the band didn't sound good (Ozzy probably) on these shoots. The quality of what I have is so poor there is no way to really tell.
