  • Vivian Campbell

I've been reading articles on Viv lately and I have to say that he is OUT OF HIS MIND!!!

He has said that in Dio he didn't like what he did because he wasn't fast enough, and he was allways trying to copy other people, and that in Def Leppard he doesn't do the solos because Phil Colle plays faster than him...

If I ever get to talk to him I would say that he was awesome in Dio and that he was as great as other players of that era.

I agree. I always thought his style was very unique with DIO.

In every interview he's done since he's been in Def Leppard, he slams Dio and the stuff he did with them. He said he wasn't really into heavy metal, it was just a job. I don't think I believe him though. He also states that Dio is a jerk because he didn't pay him or his bandmates what he said he would pay them. I think it's just sour grapes. It's funny that he says he ripped other people off, b/c Gary Moore accused him of it back in the day, and he said he didn't take anything from him.

I always though Viv had a unique sound and stood out from many of the other 80's guitar heros. I remember reading an interview when he first joined Def Leppard where he said how much better Phil Collen was...I thought he was crazy. I guess he became a better team player. He was the exact opposite in Whitesnake, where it was said he was constantly fueding with Adrian Vandenburg.

I have seen a couple interviews like that. He really slammed Dio when he first got into DL. Dio never paid him ? Hmm, would you have stayed with him all those years, tour and record 3 albums with someone who wasn't paying you ? I don't think so.

            Re: Vivian Campbell

I really dug the stuff he did with Dio. Those Holy Diver is full of great riffs as is Last In Line. Anyone remember hearing the story of Viv's run in with Danzig at I think the Donnington festival shortly after he had joined DL. Danzig lipped off to Viv while standing in line for something and Viv dropped his ass. I lost a little respect for Danzig when I heard that.

              Re: Vivian Campbell

He has a unique style and I have always been a fan. He did approach a guitar solo from a completely different angle.
I have read many articles stating that he didn't like metal or the majority of Dio songs. Regarding his statement about Phil Collen.. Phil is a damn good guitar player and more importantly.. a great writer. I'm not surprised.

He always says that, and how he enjoys being in DL more and don't think he's as fast as he used to be, because he doesn't play any solos in DL etc. etc...IMO, Dio made Campbell. And Campbell made Dio...

Campbell always had a great solo tone and "Mystery" is still one of my all time fav solos. I don't have a fav Phil Collen solo but I'll give him credit for designing the coolest Jackson IMO.

Viv did a lot of solos that have always stuck with me. Very intense vibe in his solos. “Last in Line” and “Rainbow in the Dark” are both good examples of that intensity.

I've always felt that "Don't Talk To Strangers" is some of his best work.

Adrian handed Viv his ass when I saw them on the Whitsnake tour. Vandenberg smoked Viv in every element of a live performance and guitar sound. That could be part of the reason he didnt get along with Adrian.

I like Vivian on the first 2 Dio albums, it has some kiler guitar work. I wish he's play like that today but not part of Def lep. He was pretty damn good live as a part of Dio's band when I saw him...
