I say you'll probably want higher treble and mids...

    What marshall are you using?

      JMP or a Plexi

      Use a Duncan Custom

Also a SD Charvel might not hurt

Boost your mids, easy on the lows, and make sure the highs are smooth and not buzzy/fizzy sounding. Dial in your mids first, then your lows, and finish with the highs. Short delay and chorus will complete the package.

aah nice - i started with the highs so i had t10 m4 b4 which sounds very very cool but didn't quite get it...
my amp is a behringer v tone gmx 210 which is the analogue modeller amp - just fender, marshall, boogie models - and they all sound brilliant - a truly awesome sounding amp - and for less than 200quid!! i'm probably gonna wait till have enough for a jcm 800 because they are awesome amps - but this amp will do very nicely for now - especially seeing as i used to have the 50 watt marshall mg50dfx and it was shit beyonfd belief....

on the pickup front i've been contemplating getting a lynch screaming demon - worth the money??...

            Re: hair metal sounds

My Marshall JMP-1 preamp does a GREAT job nailing all those very tones...one reason why I can't get rid of it....it's authentic 80's Marshall metal no need for stomps..I gravitate towards a later Criss Oliva / classic EVH tone..it is very close to having two Marshall 2210s that I traded for this Marshall rack systems right when it came out in '96 ..JMP-1/92200w/5881s/JFX-1....it really does the trick in getting all these tones....from Ratt / Lynch / VH / Savatage...to a more ballsy..Glen Drover tone.

My favorite Marshall head for that sound was the 2210 head...the Rack units made it in a neat package and they sound very focused and just "cooler" overall compared two running my two 2210s in stereo..It is more versatile and CONSISTANT version of that...plus I use a BBE 422 just to beef it up a notch..Marshalls are not known for their Bottom end..so this helps. Whenever I had a Marshall head..any of them...they always sound awesome one day and a bit lame other days to my ears or perception..this eliminated all of that..now its just set and forget ..plug in a play without F'n with it much.

It made me a better player thru the years simply for the fact that instead of spending time tweakin'..I spend that time playin'.

yeah man i mean the setup i've had on this amp i've had pretty constant for at least 3 months now and i only got the amp in april - once i hit it i was really happy with it - occasionally up the mid a little but with my model 4 i got a mid dial so can just twiddle with that - i think that when it comes to a nice tone it doesn't come from the amp man it has to come from your hands and the way u play ur guitar - although the amp has the overall sound its ur technique that goes towards making it good or bad i guess
