• Queensryche

My wife and I just got back from Myrtle Beach. What a kickass time we had!

First off, we get in line at the House of Blues and who is behind us but a DC area drumming legend - Corey Holland (he played with Mike Fath, Pat Travers, Joe Lynn Turner, etc.) He and his wife were a blast. As it turns out, my old bass player and drummer roadied for him so we had a lot of great stories. The folks in front of us were taking their 15 year old to his first concert and were from our area. So the wait for the show was filled with great conversation and stories. We got inside and secured a good location to see the band and not get packed in like sardines.

Queensryche did two sets: the first was "the hits" and the second was all of Mindcrime.

My wife and I have seen them several times in the last few years and Geoff struggled a lot and the band was not very together so we were prepared for anything.

The short version of the review is that they were brilliant.

There was no opening act so we got a solid 2 1/2 hrs of Queensryche. They played stuff from all their albums - it was a great selection. Geoff nailed the intro to Take Hold of the Flame (something we haven't seen him do in years). The Lady Wore Black, Empire, etc. were fantastic. The new guitar player seems to have settled in and sounded very good. The harmony guitars were tight like they used to be with Degarmo. Scott was kickin' on the drums and Eddie really delivered a solid growling bass whomp all night.

Mindcrime was great. The last time I saw it was at a big arena so seeing it on the small stage at HOB was VERY cool. I think the lady that did Mary's parts is the same lady from the original tour - if not she sounded EXACTLY like her.

We had a GREAT time. This show gets 5 stars from me.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

Cool story, Queensrÿche has always been one of my favorite bands! Did they play "Jet City Woman"?

I saw them a few months back on this same tour and I was equally amazed that he was able to hit this. I didn't think he had it in him anymore. I can't wait to hear the mindcrime album.

Re: Queensryche

I went to see them last Tuesday night at the House Of Blues Cleveland. I am major frigging impressed too. I took my girlfriend nicole, who is 25 and doesn't know any Queensyrche stuff, and I think she had a better time than I did!!! Even SHE said they were awesome, and that totally surprised me. Wants me to burn her the whole collection now, hehe...

Wilton was playing great, and had very killer guitar soundfor the material. Anyone know what he used this tour?

I've seen them many times (and saw them slay Metallica openeing for them in like 90-91) but this show was the most fun I've had in some time and the band was really on the game. I can't compliment them enough.

The only thing I could say that wasn't "totally" perfect was that Geof was losing his voice a bit towards the end on the higher stuff, but handled it with MAJOR class and still made the grade. He really is great at what he does I have to admit, and he such an absolute pro it is amazing. Nicci was enamoured at his presence and acting even though she thought he looked like he was an ummm, alternative lifestyle tpe of guy..

I will have to add that it would be nice to see Degarmo doing his duties with them. Stone just doesn't quite dupe the solos like he really should if they are trying to redo that era.

There are just times when I could have nailed parts he changed and that really alters the songs IMO. I'll figure he just changes them to be "him" and probably 'could" play them, but he really should duplicate the solos considering the situation and all. I think I noticed Tate raising an eyebrow a few times at him, hehe... Especially during the slide parts on Silent Lucidity... I suck at slide, so I can't say much either.

I got in for free but feel it would TRULY have been worth $45 a head retrospect. They were so worth it.

Go see them if you can as they won't be here forever, and for them to be doing shows like these it's truly worth the time and money!

Once again they didnt come through my area when they are by themselves I would have loved to see them do mindcrime live.

Great review! I've seen Queensryche twice, once in 1989 with Metallica and again during their Empire tour. They were great both times - Wilton & DeGarmo had a great chemistry together and Rockenfeld(?) is a damn good drummer. Tate's voice was amazing both times but I got that Queer Eye vibe from him too.

I'd love to see them again.

Speaking of Queen of the Reich, I hope you guys downloaded that video that I posted in the 80's thread, it's really funny Great song, but very cheesy video

Hey Tim, My wife and I were at that show as well and it certainly kicked a*^. We were right up front, center stage, last year we sat in the upper level and the sound is defineatly better away from the stage, but I'm a huge fan and I really enjoyed seeing everything up close. My wife wound up getting a pick from Eddie Jackson, Michael Wilton, and Scott R came over at the end of the show and handed her a drumstick, damn cool!! Great show and good crowd, lots of fun. I don't really know what they had amp wise but Wilton played his signature skull ESP guitar for the "Mindcrime" set and during the greatest hits it was all ESP as well, Except for the Taylor for "Silent Lucidity". Stone played two LTD ec 400's and one cherry burst ESP ec. Really surprised me he used the LTD series so much but they sounded great.

My wife and I were right off to the right side (facing the stage), where the steps were. We had a great view the whole night. Too bad we didn't know you were going to be there - we could have hooked up for beers!

Yeah, would have been. Something that surprised me were the number of younger people there. I thought I new quite abit about 80's metal bands, I talked with a guy behind me who was just totally into 80's shit, Ratt,Dokken,Metallica, and so on. He really got into it, said he appreciated the musicianship from that era, it gave me a little hope for the future of rock and roll. I think he said he was 20, so maybe there's hope!!

I loved em back in the day, hated Kelly Gray, wish deGarmo would stay, and may go see this dialed-in lineup soon someday.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

I really, really, really, really wanted to go see them when they came through New Orleans a few months ago. However, I was so damn poor that I couldn't justify the tickets...and my GF bought a pair of shoes instead of taking me!!!

I saw them on Empire and it was a kick ass show. They did all of Mindcrime...with the jumbo-tron playing in the back.

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

When i saw em, Wilton had a rack with 3 heads in em, one of them was a Bogner (think it was an Uber), he seemed to be using that most!
