My wife and I just got back from Myrtle Beach. What a kickass time we had!
First off, we get in line at the House of Blues and who is behind us but a DC area drumming legend - Corey Holland (he played with Mike Fath, Pat Travers, Joe Lynn Turner, etc.) He and his wife were a blast. As it turns out, my old bass player and drummer roadied for him so we had a lot of great stories. The folks in front of us were taking their 15 year old to his first concert and were from our area. So the wait for the show was filled with great conversation and stories. We got inside and secured a good location to see the band and not get packed in like sardines.
Queensryche did two sets: the first was "the hits" and the second was all of Mindcrime.
My wife and I have seen them several times in the last few years and Geoff struggled a lot and the band was not very together so we were prepared for anything.
The short version of the review is that they were brilliant.
There was no opening act so we got a solid 2 1/2 hrs of Queensryche. They played stuff from all their albums - it was a great selection. Geoff nailed the intro to Take Hold of the Flame (something we haven't seen him do in years). The Lady Wore Black, Empire, etc. were fantastic. The new guitar player seems to have settled in and sounded very good. The harmony guitars were tight like they used to be with Degarmo. Scott was kickin' on the drums and Eddie really delivered a solid growling bass whomp all night.
Mindcrime was great. The last time I saw it was at a big arena so seeing it on the small stage at HOB was VERY cool. I think the lady that did Mary's parts is the same lady from the original tour - if not she sounded EXACTLY like her.
We had a GREAT time. This show gets 5 stars from me.
