• Suffocation / Cryptopsy gear report..

First off, excellent gig. Suffocation was amazing. Cryptopsy was good, Despised Icon sent me up to the bar for a tasty beverage, and Aborted was a nice suprise. Each band used triggers on the kicks.

Aborted. Both guitarists were running Madison Divinity heads with Despised Icon's cabinets (no names / brands in sight). They had a very pleasing tone, too. One guitarist used an LTD Viper, the other a Gibson Explorer. The bassist ran a Trace Elliot rackmount bass head of some sort, into a SWR cab. He played on one of the LTD "F" basses. They had a great sound and their drummer was very easy to hear.

Despised Icon had really poor tone. Both guitarists were running the rackmount Boss GX-700 into 5150's, one guitarist was using a Behringer Compressor in his rig too. Their tones were just a big muddy mess and didn't sound anything like the 5150's. One guitarist was using an Ibanez SZ320 (in my opinion an excellent value axe), and the other was running some sort of Fender Strat with different pickups, not really sure.Couldn't really tell what the bassist was running. They had two vocalists (for no reason, as there was never an instance where there was any overlapping vocals and their vocal stylings didn't sound that much different - there was plenty of breathing time between vocal parts too). Their entire mix was just a big bunch of mud and their drummer was having some trouble with his kick pedals.

Cryptopsy's sound was much better. One guitarist was running the Dimebag guitar that he's used every single time I've seen them into a Meas Boogie Rectifier (Triple, if I remember correctly). He was using some effects on the floor, I think, but I couldn't tell what. The other guitarist (the new guy) started off on an Ibanez RG of some sort, then stopped playing that during the first of second song and jumped onto an RR3 with the neck pickup removed for the rest of the set. He was running a Mesa Triaxis into a Peavey 120 Classic power amp (I think that's what it is called). Bassist was using his usual white 5 string Carvin for the whole set and the SWR equivilant of Ampeg's SVT4 Pro (sorry don't know SWR gear).

Suffocation was up last and they had excellent tone. Both guitarists were running Peavey Triple XXX's into two Vader Cabs (side by side, not in a fullstack setup). Terrance was running his usual reverse headstock BC Rich Warlock and guy was running his usual single pickup BC Rich Warlock with the reverse strat head. Derek was running his Tobias 4 string into some sort of rig (it was hidden behind one of Terrance's Vader cabs), into 2 Kustom 4x10's. His bass tone is perfect for Suffocation's music.

Also, I forgot to mention Terrance was debuting some sort of new BC Rich guitar that was going to be entering into production real soon. It was sort of like half of a BC Rich Virgin and this sort of crazy other half. He plugged it in and ripped into some serious shredding for a bit.. And then when he went and started the song the guitar started cutting in and out, so he had to switch bad to his usual axe. It was really, really funny..

I caught this show at Anaheim, CA - my first time seeing both Cryptopsy & Suffocation! Cattle Decapitation was in there too. The new BC Rich axe is called a Zombie and Terrance used it for almost half of the set. Fave tune: Catatonia

Thanks for the report, Inearthed...I was gonna write one but I would never have got all that detail down like you did!

Well, they were on the 2nd channel (green), not the ultra channel. When I had a triple xxx, I never used the ultra channel.

Nice report. I haven't seen Suffocation for quite a few years but when I did, they absolutely blew my mind. The BC Rich Zombie is currently made as an import and I've seen one USA version that was fairly cool. Do you know if Terrance's is a USA or import (USA would have the 'R' on the headstock)? How were the new Cryptopsy tunes? I wasn't really into the new samples I heard but I dig almost everything before the new one.

yeah, that's what everyone says so far. I still need to get my hands on the new one or hear anything from it.

I saw Suffocation in Wacken and they were absolutely crushing, tight and brutal. Great tone, too! I don't remember what they played though.

thanks for the review man!

and while we're at it, be sure to check out the new bolt thrower! i just listened to the promo and it's a pleasant surprise. a lot more up-tempo stuff than on the last one, and whats most important: the leads are back.
i only listened to it once, but for now i found the first songs to be quite lame, whereas the rest kicks quite some ass.

I saw Cryptopsy back in 2002. One guitarist was using a strat, and the other was using a dimebolt. Is that the same one he is using today? I thought I saw pics of him with a black dime guitar.

Okay, sorry to have to ask this, but what are "triggers"?

Okay, I did a little reading and a trigger is what I would have guessed it to be. But my questions:

1. Why? If you have to mess with a trigger, why not just get an electronic kick drum? Why even mess with an acoustic drum in the first place?

2. Why from a sound standpoint? Can an acoustic kick drum just not get the desired sound?

3. When using a trigger, where does the desired sound come from? A sample of other acoustic kick drums? Or an entirely electronically created sound?

Sorry, but I'm not a drummer and am trying to figure that stuff out.
