• Vader, Decapitated, Dew Scented review.

Gear report for the tour first. Vader / Decapitated / Dew Scented all used the same rigs. One Marshall DSL plus a 1960 fullstack, one Marshall TSL plus 1960 fullstack. Bassists were using an SVT Classic + Fridge the whole night. Each guitarist brought a pedal or two with them.

Up first was some local band, spent their set up in the bar. Typical Seattle half assed metal BS.

Funeral Age played next (I used to play bass in the band). They did pretty well, wasn't the tightest I'd seen them, and only the singer really seemed to get into the music, while the other guys kinda just stood there and played. That being said they probably had the second best sound of the night. They were running the Marshall 8100's, one halfstack with a 1960A, the other with an Ampeg cab of some sort. Bassist was running and SVTIV Pro and he was nice and loud. Good set though.

Dew Scented played and they were definitely proving why they were signed and touring the USA. They were super tight, very aggressive, and had a lot of stage presence. Pretty much the whole band was headbanging nonstop. I guess one of their guitar players had some sort of medical emergency and had to bow out of the tour, but they pulled their music off really well without him. I did a bit of pit action, which doesn't happen very often for me, but I was definitely enjoying myself. Funny moment was between one of their songs some guy started yelling "SWEDEN! SWEDEN!" and the singer said something like "We're from Germany... But I'll take that as a compliment" and everyone started laughing. They had great overall sound, probably the best of the night.

Decapitated was up next and it was my first time having seen them. They always seemed to have to cancel their shows because of assorted reasons. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed by their set / performance. Their drummer hit very, very soft (couldn't ever hear his snare), and he seemed to not be very tight. Their guitarist was excellent, very, very tight with the bassist, and pulled out some excellent solos. He does a ton of straight downpicking and his hand was practically a blur the during the fast sections. Very humbling. He also did the helicopter the whole time. Bassist was also solid and did a lot of headbanging. I couldn't hear the singer except between songs. My buddies more in the back and up in the bar said that they couldn't hear the guitar at all.

Vader had the same sound troubles as Decapitated, but overall they were very tight and played an energetic set. Probably the best I've seen them out of the 6 times they've played out here.

Fun night.

Nice review!

I've seen Decapitated twice this year. The years before they always seemed to cancel, so that we began to joke that this band wouldn't even exist for real.
Saw them in February and in September, both times they played at the same venue on a Monday evening, and practically the same set too. The only thing different was the vocalist... the old one was much better IMO. More of a death metal voice than the new singer.
Your review describes their live show well... excellent guitar and bass work combined with non-stop helicopter headbanging.
I also saw Vader in September and they killed live. Totally tight and loud as fuck, it was a great gig.

I never got a chance to see the old singer, but the new guy did seem a little less death-y. He was the only one of the band that stayed back and shook hands with the crowd, as the guitarist / bassist left the stage and went back to the green room immediately and the drummer started taking down his cymbals. I want to see them again though. But they need a second guitarist!

Oh yeah... I forgot to mention... Between one of Vader's songs someone yelled "WHERE'S YOUR RED LIGHTSABER?" or something like that... Everyone was cracking up at that..

On Monday the 14th I saw this tour in Edmonton, AB. All bands put on a wicked show with no sound problems what so ever.

I should've mentioned in my original post that the venue that this show happened at has a tendency to not be very friendly to outside soundmen.
