I guess if thats what you think but I still don't agree. Alot of shred sounds exactly like that to me, robotic. So your never gonna be able to really convince me that all shred has emotion because I sure as hell don't see it. There is also a difference between the player being driven by emotion and the actual music have emotion.

[/ QUOTE ]
they sound uninteresting and robotic because it is their style. It's called LACK of technique, yes that's right, fast scale runs and sweep picking aren't the only techniques. Their "vocabulary" is limited. Big "vocabulary" (huge bag of tricks/techniques and shit) allows express the emotions better with the musical instrument. A great example would be Steve Vai who can do a lot of different vibratos, bending, playing with different attack, sliding etc. etc. etc. all these things are great tools for expressing emotions, those robotic shredders can not do those things and because of that they sound gay.

Gilbert is god-like when it comes to "shredders". NOBODY else is that clean with their alt picking. He's a freak.

Alot of shredders just try and play as fast as possible. Like its some sort of race. There is no emotion in that, just technique.

[/ QUOTE ]

I disagree, if they want to play as fast as possible then there is CERTANLY some emotion in there, such as "uhhh-ahhhh I can do it, I can do it, arghhhh, aaaaaahhhhh, faster faster faster, push, push puuuusssshhhh...oo boy I'm fast" it is still an emotion, only different.

[/ QUOTE ]

I disgree, there are two kinds of playing, there is playing with emotion, and then being emotionaly driven to play. Yes everyone will play for a certain emotion, to be happy that you can do it etc. But a true master can take that emotion and make it stand out in his playing where someone can feel what he was thinking. Big difference in the two.

Re: Favorite Shredder

There's a lot of guys that can play fast - there's only so fast you can play I think before it sounds unmusical and rediculous and gets boring.

A lot of guys rattle off maching gun notes as I call them and are not musical and can't get accross the emotion in their music or technique. Many guys have terrible vibrato because they work on mostly speed.

I have to like the music and expression as well as the technique. So if I had to pick just one because his music is something I can listen to without getting bored and it keeps my interst when I listen to it - I vote JASON BECKER.
