  • Arch Enemy gtr setup (krank...)

Alrite, was workin at Arch enemy the other night in Glasgow and thought some folk would be interested in their guitar setup:
They had two krank stacks, light grey, they looked pretty smart, Mike Amott's had a grey krankenstein head and the other was a black krankenstein (i think).
Mike Amott's Krank wasn't plugged in though, he had another head set up on his rack at the side of the stage and it was... a black Krankenstein! heheh. thought that might interest folk that suspect bands of using something else whilst the krank is on stage for show. Don't know if it was modded or anything, but his guitar sound was awesome as usual. he was also using a cry baby wah, rocktron hush, various effects pedals i can't remember (mxr.. phaser...) as well as a samson power conditioner and a samson wireless kit.
I couldn't see the other guitarists' set up but it looked like he was using the black krank on the stack,
    cheers
    Callum

There has been a lot of talk here about how crappy they soaund and I respect many of the opinions here but, I finally heard one (It was a Revolution actually) along side a Uber and a duel rocto and the Krank sounded meaner and more defined. The guy using the Krank was just borrowing it to try it out that night so he had the least tweak time.

I never judge amps till i sit down and play them for awhile, yeah the krank might have sounded better then the other two amps, but there is so much that goes into tone besides the amp. Pickups, guitars, pedels and even wires make a huge different in tone. Not to mention cabinets and how a cab is mic'ed, and last of all the person playing it, some people just cant tweak and amp to save there lives and sound like crap through the most expensive amp in the world.

"some people just cant tweak and amp to save there lives and sound like crap through the most expensive amp in the world."

This is true but, all the set ups were very basic...Guitar-cord-amp and the Krank stood way out to the point that people that didn’t play guitar were blown away. And like I said this amp had almost no tweak time. Just the sound check. I was expecting crap...I was so sure that I even told Steve it would sound like crap before I gave it a chance and I hate eating crow! lol

It had a duel recto like sound but, more aggressive and defined and nice clean too. And that was running side by side with the recto. I liked the way the recto sounded too but, when Jason (Stutterfly) started playing it wasn’t even close. The other amps sounded good but they didn’t stand out like the Krank. He definitely had a “Metal” tone and not a mushy “Nu Metal” tone either. It was anything but mushy.

That Krank and my XXX were the only two amps I heard comments about. I finally figured out how to properly tweak my amp for gig volumes before that show. Pinned the ch vol and backed way off on the eq settings.

Oh i am not saying it sounds bad, but depending how the guys EQ'd there amps could effect tone, not to mention amount of gain used. I plugged into a krank once and could only play it at in store volume and it sounded very thin, i am not sure which model it was, but it was about 7 months ago.

Another question i have is, when you mean running side by side, do you mean all three amps ran at the same time, or at different times during the night?

The Recto and the Krank were in one band. The Uber was playing with Diablo.

I realize the whole tweaking factor but there is also character in an amp that is sometimes undeniable and instantly identifiable. The Krank had this and it was good for aggressive metal

My XXX practise setting sound like ass turned up for jamming. It requires a totally different set up.
