• Now this guy can play!

http://www.youtube.com/watch.php?v=D...&search=guitar

Still one of my favorite players ever!

Wasn't it Rhoads that said if you wanna judge how good a guitarist is, shove an acoustic into his hands. By that logic Tommy Emmanuel is pretty much the quintessential guitargod!

Hey bro's... if you want to be floored by acoustic guitar shredding you should hear Yngwie Malmsteens acoustic guitar solo Air On the open G-string which is a live recording.
It is absolutely mind blowing.

I think you should rephrase "quintessential guitargod" with:
"quintessential SRV/Dick Dale clone".
I have heard a ton of guys play that but there is only one original. Its not nearly as hard as it sounds. Actually, its quite easy. SRV was amazing. Imagine coming up with that stuff!!

no no, Tommy is from the Chet Atkin's school, he is by far more technical than SRV or Yngwie on the acustic, Tommy plays rhythms and leads at the same time, if find that to be million times harder than sweep picking or what ever. And this vid. it was EASY song from him, there have been posted some vids. where he does some of the most amazing shit I've ever seen.

Yes John, Tommy used to play with Chet Atkins (who was his idol) and he outdates SRV and Yngwie by two decades or so. This was just him messing around, but I've posted other videos and seen a lot of his recordings, and he is truly insane.

He learned playing all by himself as a kid in Australia. He can't be placed in a box, he does pretty much anything you could imagine on an acoustic.

Have you actually heard Yngwie's live acoustic guitar solo? There is very little sweep picking. It is all CHOPS CHOPS CHOPS. The video I just watched of this guy Tommy was a total SRV inspired piece. I mentioned Dick Dale because he did that little surf run down the neck during the video.
He certainly is a good player but nothing that I would consider guitar god.
For acoustic guitar shredding I'll go with Roy Clark because not only can he shred on acoustic but he can also shred on the banjo.
Check out Malmsteens live acoustic solo and check back in.
Its amazing.
Again.. this Tommy dude is certainly good.

Re: Now this guy can play!

You can't compare the two. Shredding is cool, but it's very onesided, and Tommy can actually play those kind of runs as well.

And I seriously doubt that was SRV inspired, since Tommy was playing this kind of thing before SRV even touched a guitar.

I agree with you on most occasions John, our opinions always seem to match but I have to say you're off the mark on this one...

Re: Now this guy can play!

Yngwie's playing is very good I've hard all of his solos but there are many players who can tear his head off with ease, Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Django Reinhardt, Michael Hedges, Justin King, Tommy Emanuel etc. do by far more harder and interesting things than Yngwie.

The piece that I heard from the above link is absolutely an SRV piece. Even the title of it is SRV based.
I forget the exact name of it but its on the SRV box set called Essentials. I have it at home.

Comparing Tommy and Yngwie is apples and oranges. Both are very good... I mean world class players.

**EDIT** I replied before watching the video. Tommy's using a pick in this one.

One more thing... I am not disputing that this Tommy person is good. He is.
All I am saying is that what he is playing is just standard blues stuff. There is nothing crazy going on there.
I'll give you another acoustic guitar "shredder"
Glen Campbell.
I saw a live solo by Greg Chaquito once too that was unbelievable. He was all over the neck playing a combination of chicken picking, string skipping, scales, modes and all that crazy flaminco stuff. BTW.. he was using a nylon stringed guitar with no pic. It was crazy.

There you go John, stirring up the natives again. Besides the two fellas you mentioned, I've seen Ricky Skaggs and Vince Gill grind acoustics into dust. This Tommy guy is good, but like you said, he's no "guitar god."

The SRV tune is Rude Mood, & it has a similar boogie feel & progression. It's actually a pretty common one in lots of tunes going way back. Even the acoustic part of Ice Cream Man has some similarity. It's all about where you go from the basic launching point, & I think SRV & Tommy E. take a different approach to it & both kick major ass in the process. The last record Chet Atkins did was "The Day Fingerpickers Took Over the World" with Tommy Emmanuel. It's got some great tunes on it & was nominated for a Grammy. Keep in mind that this clip isn't showcasing his strongest skills, his fingersyle & chicken pickin', which are amazing. I missed seeing Tommy when he came through here a few months ago & I'm still bummed about it. A couple of other guys worth mentioning who do crazy stuff on acoustic are Justin King & Monte Montgomery.
