Re: Alcatrazz feat Steve Vai & Charvel

Wow, Vai sounded killer on that solo. I love Yngwie but I didn't miss him much on this one. That singer looks very gay, but he still rocks so who cares...

Bonnet rocks! He's different from most singers out there but still good and that's why I like him.

All hail the green meanie!

Bonnet is very hit or miss with me..he's either great..or really annoying...I probably have EVERYTHING he's been on...he's been on alot!

Disturbing the Peace is the Vai Alcatrazz..their second

Yngwie was on their first..No Parole for Rock N Roll..his big major label "break"..right after Mike Varney hooked him up with Ron Keel in Steeler in early '83..

and Danny Johnson replaced both Vai and Malmsteen on their third album..which sucked ass ..it was a very lack luster in the guitar department considering the shoes he had to fill..

Eddie Van Halen only gave Danny Johnson "props" at the time..not to Vai or Malmsteen...in hindsight the petty jealosy was blatant in some interviews and comments he made!

Then Eddie produced a crappy release with Danny Johnson with a female singer on Waner Bros..trying to break Danny as a new gun slinger...shit, the name is evading me..but Wayne's World used their song in the entire movie..and those solos even sucked on that albulm..

so I have NO clue what's up with Ed and Danny Johnson at the time..I think they were buds or somethin'.

Just some useless info for ya..

Bonnet was on two Rainbow recordings the 1979 studio "down to Earth...."Since you been gone" was the hit off that one..

He also did Castle Donnington live and I actually like his version of Stargazer live on that albulm..which is weird considering that's friggin' Dio!
"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!

That was kinda cheesy, but still cool. I had the second Alcatrazz album on cassette years ago and dug a few of the tunes. Again, cheesy lyrics, but Vai's playing was great. I dug Painted Lover and the solo in Desert Diamond. There were others, but those are the two that stand out.

Also, I think Malmsteen's solo in Island in the Sun is one of his best. Not the all out technical tour de force Malmsteen usually rips out, but it had great bending and vibrato and some nice melody going on. Some speedy parts too. Too bad, again, the lyrics and tune itself were cheesy as hell.

Great vids. I agree that anything with Vai is cool, but "The Graham Cracker" is a bit hard to swallow...

I still can't believe he was in Deep Purple...

He wasn't in Deep Purple. he was in Rainbow for one record.

My bad. Thanks for clearing that up!

I'm not exactly sure on this, but I think I remember reading that the Danny Johnson project EVH helped produce was called "Private Life" or something....

Painted Lover is one of my favorite Vai tunes ever. I'd love to hear that one recorded again with a better singer. I used to have a vid of them doing that one live - Vai plays his mini Strat for the cool intro riff.

As a matter of fact, I'm gonna listen to this album right now.

I thought some of Malmsteins best work was on that album

Damn, I own that CD but I can't remember the band's name and I'm in PA for Christmas so I can't look it up in my collection. If anyone is still interested, I'll be back in Denver next Wednesday...let me know.

Man, I love this damn video. It's interesting to see the Green Meanie before the Lion Claw, lower horn being sanded down, wrist plate added, etc.

I like hearing/watching Vai play in general. No real reason to compare him, or anyone else if you like that persons playing. Like Bill said, Vai and Yngwie "J" have their own style/sound, and both are great guitarists, so just leave it at that. Thanks for the link Pebber. Very cool.
