Steve Vai IS primaly a fusion player. The most metal thing he has ever done is Whitesnake wich isn't metal, Whitesnake is a cool 80's big hair rock specially the Vai's Slip Of The Tongue era. Alcatrazz was a popish prog rock band. DLR was party pop rock. His solo albums are full of fusion wich is mixed with prog, oriental music and rock. He hasn't never done any real metal (well Bad Horsie, Building The Curch and a couple of more are a little bit metal but that's it). With Zappa he did prog/experimental music. Then he had many fusion bands with Stu Hamm and Chris Frazier all between Alcatrazz, DLR and Whitesnake. He is a schooled jazz player and awlays has done that. He did rock'n'roll do get the fame, money and chicks and because it was cool and fun. But he always wanted to be a solo artist and most of it is based on jazz/fusion.

70's scorpions was more of a classic rock than heavy metal band IMO.

Also Marty Friedman said that metal shredding is super EASY compared to flamenco, jazz etc.

BTW. I've never concidered Eddie, DeMartini, Lynch, Sykes etc. as metal players, and they don't concider as they are metal players.

I remember and Interwiev with R. Crosby, some folks concidered Ratt as a metal band but King denyed it and said that Judas Priest is metal, they are melodic rock band or something like that.

Well, I would say those bands are '80s metal..but you could also just call them hard rock bands, I guess. It is really hard to put a label on stuff, you know?

I mean, what is YJM? Is that metal, or is that neo-classical...or is it just shred? What is Eric Johnson? Is he a fusion player, I would say yes and as a matter of fact he is on Fusion Groovin' right now...but some would call him a rock guitar player.

I consider mostly anything that appears on Headbangers Ball to be metal.

These bands are all on or were on Headbangers Ball. All of their records appear in the metal section of all the music stores, they are featured in all of the metal magazines etc... How could they not be metal? Maybe you don't consider them metal but the industry certainly does. I do too.

Yep.. its a geographical thing bro. In the states.. those bands are metal bands. Some heavier than others but they all fall into that category.

I love Marty, one of my most favorite. But comon - he is far from being fast or really 'technical' player. Musical, invertive - yes. He just gets buy with his techical abilities, and he is TALENTED musicians.

Gah I agree with parts of most people's posts. First thing's first... DragonForce is fucking badass. They are one of the only bands that make me listen to the entire album, every single song.

As far as this whole metal vs. fusion thing goes... it's a tough call. It's easier to play metal at a high level, but harder to be one of the best. There are SO MANY metal guys that are technically great that it's almost impossible to distinguish yourself from the rest. Fusion on the other hand requires a lot more knowledge and creativity to be good, but it's much easier to develop a unique identity since there are no rules. I think the great fusion guys are probably the best technical players, but I'll be honest here...

Most fusion is not fun to listen to. Yes, it's very technically impressive but I just do not enjoy listening to it as much as blues, rock, or metal. Blues, rock, and metal can be technically impressive and are also FUN to listen to. They make me want to raise the horns to the sky, headbang, jump up and down, play mad air guitar, basically make myself look like a total idiot. They also make me want to play my guitar, which is reason enough for me to listen to it over jazz/fusion stuff.

(these are my opinions IN GENERAL, I do really enjoy some jazz and fusion stuff but a lot of it just sounds too weird to me even after listening to a lot of it)
